SA 950 mystery guitar?

Unread post by Dandan » Tue Mar 06, 2018 5:22 pm

Recently I was looking for a secondhand 2200 but came across a Yamaha SA described as being identical to a 2200 only with chrome finishing. I cannot find any information on 950. I have no idea what to offer the guy. I’m waiting for the owner to send me the serial number. In excellent condition, what would be an appropriate price to pay? Has anyone heard of this model?

Hi Dandan, welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

You're in luck, one of our members, Bill Alston made a fantastic pdf file giving a great deal of info.

Bill and I have shared a lot of info and pictures, so I hope it's fine with him that I publish some of his work here. ((i))

Thanks for the info Buzzard. Looks exactly like the photos.I guess that makes 4. I haven’t seen it in person yet as owner is over seas. He’s asking $1800 Australian. Brand new 2200s sell for around $2200 $2300 in aus. Was the 950 a prototype for the 2200?

Cheers

According to Bill, the SA-950 is VERY RARE.

Cut'n'paste:

This is a very rare guitar indeed I have now found evidence of 3 of them.
One on a Japanese blog with a picture that could be anything and one on an Ebay sale SYJ1024 which sold for a $1099 in June 2013.
More recently I came across SYJ1086 bought in 2010 by a then member of the Japanaxe forum.
No pictures but stated to be Tobacco Sunburst.
All evidence suggests that these were made for a very short time in 1992 if anyone has a 1992 Japanese catalogue that references them that would help.
The Japanese blog via Google translate seems to suggest that there were only 91 of these made, but that could easily be a mistranslation of 1991.
March 2016 there is a 950 in Red Sunburst for sale at around £650 on a Japanese auction site.
Seller confirms limited numbers made in 1992.

-----------------------

My only SA is the newer SA-503TVL, but other members have vintage SA models. hopefully they'll jump in with more advise,
but I think you have a chance to own a gem at a price that's actually pretty good considering what you get.

Regards
Peter

I found a ref saying there were definitely only 91 of these SA-950's made although I lost the link, will try and track it down again. so very rare indeed!

Looks very nice.

Does it have the label in the F hole like pics from Bill's info?

Unfortunately I have not seen the guitar in person yet. Theses photos are from the owner. He is overseas and does not know the serial number. He will be back soon

Serial number on the SA's generally aren't helpful. If there is a label in F hole will show the model, as truss rod cover is blank.

Dating it can usually be done from the pickups, but I don't know if Yamaha continued stamping them with date codes. My Y experience is limited to SG & SA from late 70's to 80's.
