Yamaha SGV800 Tremolo Bridge - Help!!

Unread post by Djlavalamp » Mon Mar 12, 2018 2:02 am

Hi Everyone,

I’m new to the Yamaha guitar world. I just got a SGV800 but it has a broken piece in the bridge/tremolo.

I’ve been watching eBay and reverb, tried Yamaha 24X7 and everything else I can think of.

So...

I don’t know where the right place to post this is, but if any one has any spare SGV300 or 800 tremolo parts, please contact me. I would love to buy them and get this guitar playing again!

Thanks all!

Welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

Parts for an SGV-800 bridge isn't among the parts off the shelf,
but most parts can be machined from scratch, usually a bit pricey.
Dave from frets on the net is worth a try too.

A few pictures showing the bridge and the damaged part(s) will help determine what to do and where to go.

Best Regards
Peter

Thank you Peter!

Here are a few pics of the piece in question.

Hope that is helpful, I’m planning on visiting a machine shop today to see what can be done. But I’d love to find an original if it’s even possible.

Thanks for sharing those images dj. That should be "relatively" easy to get made up at a local workshop although it really should not have broken in the first place. Someone must have been really hammering it for it to break like that!

By the way the SGV800 is probably my favourite Yamaha electric guitar. Just love the quirky shape of it ;)

Wow, that is broken right through ..... bummer :(

Depending of the material, a repair may be possible, but a good machinist can make the part in (polished) stainless steel.

Vintage spare parts do come up every now and then, unfortunately, the add I found isn't available anymore: https://reverb.com/uk/item/2278476-yama ... and-bridge

Let's know how you tackle the problem to get your SGV-800 back to it's former glory. :D

After visiting a few machine shops, they’ve determined that the part is aluminum that is chrome plated. It’s now at Hollywood Welders in Los Angeles. They seem to be pretty confident that they can make it strong enough to hold the pressure of guitar strings tuned to pitch. I’ll post pics when I get it back. Fingers crossed 🤞

Still happy to hear from anyone who may have a spare tremolo available haha 😜

Well guys, I just got the part back from the welders! He was about 85% sure it would hold the tension from the strings. He did a good job getting it as sturdy as possible. It fits it and is smooth with the tremolo arm without strings. I’m about to string it up, wish me luck!!

Thanks for all of your input :)

She’s strung up and tuned to pitch with .10-.46’s. Sounds so good! Fingers crossed that the welds hold up until I can find a new tremolo for sale someday! Shoutout to Hollywood Welders in Los Angeles, I highly recommend them if you need welding services in the LA area.

Here’s a few pics!
