Dream Guitar Gear - What would you choose?

Unread post by Saul » Wed May 09, 2018 12:35 am

Was recently watching a video by the rather wonderful Mary Spender where she hosted a podcast with the guys from Guitar Geeks and in that she posed the question, if money were no object what guitar, pedal and amp would you buy. That got me thinking so I'm putting it out there.

Obviously my choices would be acoustic based but since the majority of guitarists on our forum play electric I decided to post the question in the Electric Guitar, Amps & Effect section.

My choice right now would be: What would you choose? Remember ONE guitar, one pedal and one amp. Can be used or new or something you already own.

So if we are talking Dave Gilmour's original setup that would be :
  • Fender 1968-69 alder body with black finish painted over the original sunburst finish.
  • Hiwatt DR103 All Purpose 100W heads with Mullard 4xEL34 power tubes and 4xECC83 pre-amp tubes
  • WEM Super Starfinder 200 cabinets with 4×12” Fane Crescendo speakers
  • Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi Effect Pedal
You can only have one pedal ;)

Would that be right Les?

One guitar, one amp and one pedal ............ :(

Are you out of your mind Saul :?: I'm a hardcore Yamaholic.  it's just not doable.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. :(

Yamaha Weddington Custom + Yamaha DG130h with 412 cabinet and a Boss PH-1r phaser.

This setup is LOUD and Rockin' ((i))

Weddington for versatility and FEEL. Most Weddington owners will swear that guitar and hands are having a love affair.
DG amp (predecessor for THR amps) with built in reverb , chorus and delay + possibility to save presets/patches + midi control.
Boss PH-1r because it's the best sounding phaser IMO.

Ahh you see, not too hard Peter ;)

I do know what you mean though. I had to think long and hard about it. I have three Dowina acoustics here and I would be hard pressed to part with any of them. There are many others in the range that I would love to own but, if I really had to only choose one it would be the Acero GAC DS. Obviously not a guitar many are familiar with but it's definitely up there with the likes of Avalon and Lowden.

I chose the AER Compact 60 because it's one of the few amps I have heard that really doesn't take anything away from the acoustic sound of the guitar, it just oozes quality.

The Gamechanger Audio Plus Sustain Pedal is quite different from most looper pedals and as I play in dropped D most of the time, the sustained "drone' effect this pedal produces fits perfectly with how I play. It also looks amazing! :)

Must say I do like the looks and shape of the Weddington. How much do they go for these days, £4-500?

Weddingtons were never cheap, I got my Custom for 999USD and the Classic for 799USD a few years back.
Today both models usually sell well above the 1000USD mark.

The beauty of the Weddington is that it is what a Les Paul could have developed into.
Less weight, carved body, no heel and a slimmer neck.
The p.u. switch has 5 settings: 1 , 3 , and 5 is like any other humbucker guitar,
but settings 2 and 4 are brilliant for more subtle playing, almost acoustic(ish) sound.

Regards
Peter

Sounds like the things I would look for in an electric guitar, light body, no heel and slim neck, the carved body helps too of course ;)

I can see why you put it as your chosen guitar.

This is definitely a tough question to answer. I would go with a Yamaha YEG-100A, a Kemper 600 watt profiler with controller. I don't have a favorite cabinet but a 4x12 that would handle 600 watts.

That Kemper 600 watt profiler is an interesting choice Jeff. Essentially it's any amp you want it to be so a gives a great level of versatility.
kemper_600_watt_profiler.jpg
Kemper 600 watt profiler
The Kemper Profiler is the all-in-one solution for electric guitar and bass. It's a multi-effect-processor, preamp and optional poweramp. Due to its high connectivity it fits perfect to all purposes, no matter if you're playing live, at home or in the studio.

It ships with hundreds of the best amps in the world, profiled under perfect conditions in professional studios worldwide.

Profiler allows you to capture the sonic DNA of any amp with the press of a single button - a unique technology, called Profiling, invented by Kemper.
And of course the Yamaha YEG-100A is an amazing looking guitar. Yamaha definitely need to be producing eye catching guitars like this these days.

Wait wait !!! Do I have to give up all the rest of my Yams? Is this a plot to flood the market with good used Yamahas? 8O
Amp wise I'm unsure but for a guitar it's got to be Carlos' original Buddha SG and I would also probably take Phaser.
I do agree that the Weddington would be a delicious alternative.

Yeah, I had a hunch that Saul is trying to make us lighten up the load by reducing our collections
(just kidding)
