Pacifica 012 vs 611?

Unread post by buraian » Sun Aug 19, 2018 10:52 pm

A few years ago, I decided to take guitar lessons again. I didn't have much money to spend and no one really to ask for advice, so I bought a cheap Squier Bullet Telecaster. I feel like it's hindering my progress, and practicing has always been a bit of a chore, because I feel like I'm fighting the instrument.

I've had my eye on the Pacifica 611HFM for the last two years, but I just can't find one to actually try. Yesterday, I got my hands on a 012, and I was really impressed. Much easier than my squier.

So my question is, if I like the 012, will I find the 611 similar in terms of playability? (Neck width, radius, and whatnot?) There's almost universal praise for the 611, but US$600 is a lot to spend based on reviews alone.

Cheers,

Hi Brian, welcome to yamahamusicians.com:)

I think really you would be fine with the 012 for now or maybe the 112V or 120H. Neither of those would break the bank and they are great guitars. Having said that I can pretty much guarantee you would not be disappointed with the 611 but will leave it for others to give you the low down on that.

Hi Brian, welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

Since you have a Pacifica 012, you might want a 611 as well,
but take your time until you find one you can try before buying.

The 611 have superior specs, but it really comes down to how YOU think it sounds and feels.

Best Regards

I think that if there is one guitar you can't go wrong with, it must be the 611.

But as I read it's gonne be your first 'real' guitar (sorry Squier). I think it's best when you had her in your hands before you buy.

What I sometimes do is waiting for a second hand one for a price that makes it easy to sell again without loosing much money. Just try her for a while, much better than playing in a shop for half an hour, and just sell again if you don't like her after some time.

I've only had one new guitar in my life, all my guitars, and I've had plenty, were bought second hand. If a guitar is still good after 5 or 10 years, she'll be good forever.

Okay, so by "a few days," I guess I meant four months. Anyway, I bought the Pacifica. Looks like an older 612. I bought it online from a Guitar Center in Kentucky. Frankly, I don't think they were completely straight about the condition of the instrument. The coil tap does nothing, and I think there are other electronic issues, as well. There are also some minor cosmetic flaws, but you have to look pretty closely. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they just didn't take the time to thoroughly check it out. But they also didn't put much effort into cleaning it, which is supposed to be part of the deal on used gear. And I asked them for the serial number so I could confirm the model. The request was ignored, but I bought it anyway, knowing there was a 45 day return policy. As you can see, the serial number on the headstock is "012345." I assume the neck is not original.

Anyway, I still love the guitar, and I don't regret buying it. In fact, I plan on taking it to Charley's Guitar Bar this weekend to see about having any issues corrected and maybe some upgrades. (By the time I pay for all that, I probably could have just bought a brand new 611.) But the experience has soured me on buying used equipment from Guitar Center, at least long-distance.

Nice looking guitar. Sounds to me like that particular branch of Guitar Centre are all about the sale and nothing about customer service? They definitely should have responded when you requested the serial number but it's now of course quite obvious why they did not.

As for cleaning used guitar I think they are probably not alone in not bothering to do that. Plenty of stores just take in used gear and sell it straight out without touching it. That shows a lack of care and interest in both the product and the customer and I would definitely not be buying from them again.

Overall though, if you like how the guitar looks and plays then that is the main thing. The coil tap should be relatively simple to fix so if that is the only real issue then things are not so bad :)

Congrats on your purchase. Hard to go wrong with a Yamaha.
I was just wondering how critical a coil split is on a HSS guitar. Plenty of options even without it. Of course you did pay for a guitar with the option so...............
Your lack of service from GC might be one of the reasons they are struggling. And a good warning to others.
Anyway hope you enjoy it and it helps you along the road to more guitar fun.
