Happy new project day

Unread post by NYGeorge » Tue Dec 18, 2018 8:38 pm

I got this today fresh from Canada. An SG90 which turns out to be nicer than I thought. Some blushing of the finish which appears to be a reasonably easy fix as it seems to have only affected the top of the finish. And some missing binding on the headstock which can be replaced. There is a little wood loss near the binding loss on one side. Have to see what can be done about that. One of the volume controls has a piece missing. I have at least one other with the exact same breakage. Hard to figure except at some point someone gave it a hefty pry job. At least all the labels are there. I plugged it in briefly and it sounds great with good low action but no fret out or buzzing, There is minor grooving on first fret but not really noticeable to me. Here are some pictures and I will post some more when I get is fixed up a bit. I guess some would say it's not worth the effort but I watch both Ebay and Reverb regularly( read constantly) and the SG90 seems to be pretty rare. Having a look at the electronics will also help me determine what is what with my SG 175.

Well after many hours with 0000 steel wool and more of polishing here she is. The entire guitar had a blush to it which I have pretty much taken care of. I was really nasty when I got it. The back of the neck looked like someone had waxed it over the years and never removed any of it. There was smurm and film on everything. Simple Green and some scrubbing took care of that. Fortunately all the chrome was pretty good under the yuck. Still have to repair the binding but I have some model builders styrene in stock the looks like it will work. Just have to decide how to age it quickly. Knobs are from an extra SG45 with neck repair that I had. I thought the chrome on them looked good with this one. You can still see the shadow from the sticker that was on the back. I might have been able to get rid of it but didn't want to chance breaking through the finish.

You should do some work on my guitars George, that looks great!

All you need to do is to get a truss rod cover restore the binding if possible, it you restore it to its true beauty.

If I come across a truss rod cover on the JYA, I will let you know.

Starts looking great ((i)) . And I even saw a word I didn't know before: smurm. Googled but found nothing :( . But I think I understand what you mean.

BTW: sometimes smurm contributes to the mojo of vintage instruments

Crazy isn't it. Don't see one forever and suddenly they're everywhere. That's a nice one and worth the money in my opinion.
Fortunately I paid way less for mine or I might feel bad right now.

Interesting to see they stamped the serial number on the neck, just like the early superaxes, etc.
