Information on a Yamaha SE1220 guitar

Unread post by jeff-carolina » Sun Nov 16, 2014 4:30 am

Hello All,
Thank-You for the kind welcome to your forum. I just bought the SE1220 (cream color) and was wondering if anyone has any information on it? I would settle for any tidbits of information as I have know very little about this other than it is a 1987 vintagage # 182 and it is definately a top end model. Enclosed is a picture of it beside my SE 350. They both sound nice through the THR10
Thank-You,
Jeff-Carolina

Hi Jeff.

That's a fab pair of SE's ((i))

The Taiwan made SE guitars of the 80/90's have bodies close to regular strats,
but pickups, floyds and locking nuts in the superstrat class. (well, in most cases) :D

Your SE-1220 is in the top line, neck through, beautifully made, with quality hardware.
I guess that both your SE models have coilsplit switch to get single coil sound as well as humbuckers :?:

My SE-912A is a regular HSS strat, bolt on neck, classic tremolo , 5-way pickup switch and coilsplit for the bridge pickup.
This one has roller nut and active Yamaha pickups, sounding close to "ordinary" HSS strats.

I also use a THR amp for most of my playing because of it's versatility and ease of use.

The SE guitars are somewhat overlooked, however, there's lots of pictures and reviews online,
praising the sound and build quality, these contain some usable info/specs.

Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,
That is a beautiful guitar..and looks to be quite the player! From my experience these Yamaha guitars are all extraordinary sounding and playing guitars. While I have found information on the SE models in general I have found nothing on the SE 1220 model or the SE 1220a which according to Yamaha they made with active pu's. Thank-You for sharing the pics I'm saving them in my archives and I'm enclosing this ad, I found it while searching on the internet. I also found this video, I don't know who he is but it is the same model and color guitar. You are correct they both have a coil tap to split the humbuckers.
Thank-You,
Jeff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjq6aIs-GDU

Yep, the "A" models have active pickups. :)

I really don't know if active pickups sound better, maybe for recording ?

Don't get me wrong, they sound great, but (to my ears) no better than a good/great set of regular pickups.,
but being a gadget geek, I think active pickups are cool.

There is also active mini humbucker (and piezo) in my AEX-500, also a fine Yamaha twanger. ((i))

That is a very interesting looking guitar! What style of music do you normally play on it? It would appear you have an awesome collection of guitars. Very Nice Indeed!! For certain music I do like the sound of active pu's as they just to have a voice of their own.

AEX-500 is actually the low end of the AEX series, but what a sound. ((i))

It's VERY slimline, so it sounds a bit weak acoustic, but ok for practice ......
But when you plug it in, it's MAGIG !! , great for jazz/blues.
The controls are a volume and a balance knob for the pickups, and a 3 band equalizer for the piezo on the top side.

I also have the AEX-500N (nylon strings)

These are fairly cheap, definately worth a try. :D

Hi Peter,
I don't have any Yamaha's with active pups but I have this Strat that I'm rather partial to.

That's a nice burst on your strat, is it red(ish) as it looks like on the picture ? , is it a Fender ?

Hi Peter,

You have a serious collection of guitars I take it. Very nice! The nylon string Aex looks interesting. It is a red burst, looks very nice in the light, it is a 1994 vintage.
