SA1100 Mysteries

Unread post by balston11 »

I am currently undertaking a project to produce a definitive guide to Yamaha's SA series to follow from the "supposedstringmeisters" excellent work. I am having trouble with the 1100. This is an extract from my notes does anyone have any definitive information on whether my speculation at the end is correct.
Yamaha SA 1100
This guitar was made in 1988 to 1991 and retailed on release at 90,000 yen according to Yamaha’s Japanese archives. These are a bit mysterious because they appear to re-emerge in the western market in 1994, not sure for how long. The ones I have seen are definitely made in Japan but there are several comments from good sources that these are made in Taiwan but I have not seen any evidence of this myself. I have seen 1100s advertised for sale as made in Taiwan but no pictures showing this.
Possibly the first run from 88-91 was Japanese and they made some from 1994 onwards in Taiwan, but this is just speculation.

This is a big project but should provide a good resource and I may be asking for some more help over the coming weeks but I do have a fairly sizeable amount of verified information to work with. All help appreciated

Hi <balston11>

You should definitely talk to Peter (<buzzard>). The Guitar section of this forum has experienced something of a Renaissance since he joined.

He has an ENORMOUS collection of Yamaha Guitars (check his earlier posts).

I'm sure you would have MUCH to talk about 8)

Whoo

When it comes to knowledge of Yamaha SA guitars, Bill has the upper hand. :D

Here's a fine example of his work: http://www.alston-family.co.uk/SA/indexsa.php Good job Bill. ((i))

I'll chip in when I can, and I hope anyone who can contribute, will give Bill full support. :D

Best Regards
Peter

Indeed so . . . .

People ARE finding us all the time, and the Forum is a great resource for people looking to keep older boards/Axes working, as time goes along - Or simply to chat with like-minded souls about our "favourites".

The collective knowledge held by the members here is extremely wide - and also extends to projects such as re-manufacturing some of the Memory expansion modules that were available (and expensive) back in the day for some of the older and venerable boards 8) .

Check our member Brian's work here, for instance: http://www.sector101.co.uk/index.html

Always good to spread the word - and thank you for doing so ((i))

Best Regards

Nice Guitar price perhaps a touch high. Guy had one for sale on Ebay last month advertised as MIJ start £650 when I asked him to double check before I bid because some are made in Taiwan he just sent me a messsage back saying "It is made in Taiwan" and took it down, not sure why he didn't just correct the description and carry on with the sale maybe at a slightly lower start price.

I currently own a made in Taiwan sa 1100. I have had the guitar for over 20 years and from my research it is apparently a 1988 model. Don't know how many years that the sa 1100 was made but it is essentially a copy of the Gibson. Dot 335. I purchased the guitar in Pennsylvania for a very very inexpensive price back in the 1990s. They have apparently increased in value quite a bit from when I purchased mine but they seem to be somewhat elusive on the market.

Hi and welcome to the forum in fact most of the SAs are quite scarce except for the 500 the TVL and the 2200. The rarest are obviously the 950 and the 1300W even though the Taiwan SAs are very good guitars the MIJs always make quite a bit more. The last MIT SA1100 I saw about 2 years ago only made about £350 which is ridiculous I would expect now an MIT 1100 would make about £700 if in good condition.
If you are interested in these guitars have a look at my website
