You're right John . . . .

We used something like this in our new build at the Uni before I left.

The MacPros lived in a "Machine Room", remote from the Studios and we used Cat5 wiring . . . .

So the Studios only had the SVGA Monitors/Keyboards/Mice and the DIGI-002 or 003 Interfaces, resident.

ATM, I can't remember WHAT was carried . . . . Audio, Midi, Vga - perhaps all of these . . .

I DO remember it was a Gefen product gefen.com/technology/av-over-ip

Prices look a bit eye-watering - but I think these are intended for major infrastructural builds . . .

This was back in 2008 - so there's probably more players in this field now . . . maybe even WiFi variants . . .?

The pic shows one installed MacPro, the Gefen box is there . . . The smaller Box on top did the SVGA over cat5 IIRC

Meantime, I found THIS: eurekasound.com/midimizer . . . . for Midi only . . .

Look up Tobias Erichsen's web site. He created rtpMIDI for Windows, loopMIDI, and virtualMIDI driver.

Hey John,

>> the specification will become available to download to MMA members as per MIDI 1.0. BTW joining the MMA is free.

Not quite. The spec is being developed by the "MMA", which is an engineering group made up of companies that develop MIDI software and hardware, and membership in MMA is not free.

Once the spec is complete it will become available for download by members of the "MIDI Association", which is a global community for anyone who works or plays with MIDI (not just product developers) and joining the MIDI Association is free.

Best,

Talking about the MIDI ports again: I agree that a higher bandwidth on the existing MIDI connectors / cables would limit the length of the wires. Considering that I have a 5 meter MIDI cable which works very reliable that's not much of a limitation. Also any dirt cheap UART built in the last ten years or more is certainly capable of driving a much higher serial speed than what is used for MIDI (32150 baud). I would be surprised if the MIDI port built into the Montage / MODX could not do a higher bandwidth. Since we believe that the cables can handle it (although maybe only the shorter ones) and the Montage can handle it, it could well be that a firmware update would give it a higher bandwidth and full implementation of the MIDI 2.0 standard. Pure speculation, of course, but let's see... And over USB I think it is a given.

It's not the cable that's the issue.
The MIDI port is driven by a UART and the input is derived from an opto-coupler.
To go any faster would require changes to this mechanism.
Right. The 5-pin DIN connector/wiring is not a limitation at all, it could go as fast as anything. I'd expect that these jacks will remain part of the spec, and that any 2.0 device will have the ability to directly connect to an old device. There is no reason to "standardize" on a new connector, it would provide no benefit.

Of course, you'd expect the protocol to extend to USB (just as the current protocol does), but it makes no sense to think MIDI 2.0 will depend on or be based on USB communication. Three reasons it makes no sense:

* it would wipe out the universal compatibility we've had for 35 years

* being a host-slave rather than peer-to-peer system, it becomes complicated (and expensive) to assure that you can continue to connect any two items together

* 20 years from now, USB may well have gone the way of RS232, SCSI, Centronics Parallel, Firewire, etc. There's tons of such gear out there that nobody thought would become obsolete. Meanwhile 5-pin DIN MIDI continues to be available and cheap, and should always be, because it's built from such basic componentry.

Yes indeed, particularly THIS . . . .

Even Rick Wakeman commented on this in a recent interview I saw -

saying that USB-Midi should be regarded as an ADDITION rather than a REPLACEMENT . . .

IMO - ANY Gear that has aspirations towards Professional Use MUST retain those DINs.
