Nice :-)
Your building up quite a studio. :D
I have not seen or heard an EX5 in person or online,
except for the what I heard in Derek's "mist on silk road". I must go look now.

The EX5 is some ways is still the most sophisticated synth Yamaha has ever made. It was the Kronos of it's time... multiple synth engines, huge timbral palette, lots of on board controllers.

As Derek noted, it's 'failure' was under-spec'd hardware. But still a fantastic sounding synth. I often get this -> <- close to buying one but never pull the trigger.

Truly a fun board to be involved with the dev and voicing, esp the FDSP engine which was a precursor to the current digital 'bit manipulator' audio-munching plug ins.

Manny
One day possibly I could get my hands on one, if not the rack version. It would probably come from OS as I have never ever seen
anything like this at all for sale anywhere, in all the the time I've played keyboards and had internet in some form.

I'm seriously thinking about selling my EX5R (it has SCSI, 64MB RAM and 16MB Flash and the last official firmware), given that I never find the time to use it properly and that it has a lot over overlap with the CS6R I own too.

Too many synths, too little time. :/:

Derek,

OK, ok ok I made the jump... me too now have EX5 (caveman grunt-speak)

Should be arriving next week

I found both the rack and the keyboard for reasonable prices, ultimately decided on the keyboard as it has the SCSI interface even though I don't have room for another keyboard per se. But wanted access to the controllers under the display.

Who knows, it may become my new master controller if I ever follow through on racking my SY99's...

You cost me $800 bro ! :D

Great, another new EX5 owner on the Forum  !!!

I have found that my EX5 needs some care on the 6 controls under the display. I have found that my EX7 works lots better on that point. Well, it is not really a big surprise, as the EX7 is mint. Luckily, I have an spare VR board with the 6 controls which I wanted to replace the EX5R ones, but they are not really bad, just one has a different feeling, with less friction. So I will keep the EX5R as is and will replace the EX5 ones. Of course, perhaps just a good cleaning with DeoxIT D5 is enough on the current controls. I will check and decide if replace them or just clean. All in all, I am very glad with the buting (520€ was a good price, as it has SCSI and 64MB expansion fitted). Once I receive the FLASH expansion from Sector101 it will be perfect

I have also a GOTEK floppy emulator which could be fitted instead of the FDD... I don't like to modify the appearance of the unit too much, but this is an small mod and perhaps worth the effort. Any hint / experience on this?

Welcome to the fold, and I'll buy you an expensive beer if ever you make it to West Wales :)

Don;t forget that if it does not have FLASH then Sector 101 can fill that void for you!

Would have been easier to just pay the seller to hit it with a hammer !

Maybe it's a sign to get an EX5r instead...

How I hate to see (and suffer) those kind of shipping disasters. I had a similar case with a perfect looking SY77, which arrived smashed at both ends due also to careless packaging

I feel your pain

I'm pissed off when I see that.

The packing was poor, but the employee of the parcel delivery company (I should say the assh¤le) who smashed the parcel is the main culprit.

Got my refund, but right now hard to find any EX5/r's at a resonable price... There's a nice EX5 for local pickup, but the seller is firm at $950 and that's a no go for me.

May end up going for a Motif ES Rack with AN and VL cards which I can get all for about $850. No FDSP :( but a nice compact rack presence and more AN & VL capabilities than the EX.... decisions, decisions!

I have that Motif ES Rack AN and PLG combo, and it is capable of some very nice sounds, but the PLG concept is such a PITA to program as you cannot do it from the synth UI (the big plus of the EX5), only from computer based editors. All the editors are legacy (but still just about working the last time I checked), and I still think the EX5 sounds better.

That is a high price for the EX5, mind, prepal is showing $800 on average. Could you use that for some leverage for making an offer?

Derek,

Agreed - re legacy editors and such, but I'm there anyway for the Expert Editor for th VL.

For sure could haggle the seller of the local EX5 on price, but I'm one of those who's not a comfortable haggler... besides, dealing with the size and heft of the keyboard really showed that if I revisit, it will be for an EX5r.

The hardest thing I'm actually struggling to 'just say no!" is I've found a local seller asking just $450 for an SY99 that's only in need of a display backlight and floppy drive belt...

I see your point, you just have nine SY99 so adding that one would mean having a round number of them
