ex5 keys not functioning

Unread post by nocents » Fri Jan 26, 2018 8:35 am

hello
I recently bought a used ex5 and had to swap out a key. I carefully took apart and reassembled the keyboard however upon rebooting the keys c c# d d# e f f# dont work with the f sometimes working. i reopened the keyboard and saw all keys are touching sensors with contact. what could possibly be wrong? all keys worked before originally disassembly
any and all help is much appreciated
thanks
Steve

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum :)

On other keyboards I have owned there is usually a rubberised contact strip that runs the length of the keybed and if that is sitting even slightly out then some of the keys will not sound.

If it were me I would test each key whilst the keyboard is apart. If you find they are all working but then not working when you reassemble it is quite likely something moved when you were replacing everything.

We do have a lot of EX expertise on the forum though so hang in there. Someone will be along soon who can help in a more detailed way.

I have tried testing the keys when disassembled they still don't work. I have a tech I know but I wouldn't be able to be in touch until next week ...when I get a chance I will check the contact strip.

Hi Steve, sorry you are having troubles. I haven't yet had to delve into the key-bed myself but here is a topic which may perhaps be of some use.

First, you should find out if there is a mechanical (keys, contact) or electronic (chip,"computer") problem.
Is the ex5 dusty or dirty inside?

For example: Yamaha DGX 205

3 specific keys in the middle of the keyboard have a mark. When the touch dynamics are activated, these keys often produce a very loud sound when playing, even though I only lightly press the keys. These erroneous sounds are above average noisy. Even if I strongly play a beliebege key, the volume of the sound does not match the volume of the mute sound. This stop error interferes with the game very much. If you play the wrong keys a bit harder, this error does not occur.

Answer: Sounds like the rubber bar is broken.
The rubber strip is a contact strip which is responsible for the velocity.
Do not know what the key is still worth and whether a repair would be worthwhile, I do not think so.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: It is a mechanical and not an electronic problem - so there is no update, no driver and no factory settings.

Answer: As I said, it happens quite often that dirt accumulates among the contacts after some time. The principle is the same for all manufacturers and the following image (from a northern repair description) shows a Fatar keyboard - but your Yamaha also works on exactly this principle.

Probably a cleaning is enough - and XYZ wrote at the time how to do that:
Lift the rubber strip and clean contact strips using cotton swabs soaked in alcohol or isopropanol.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WORKED!
Thank you Be-3 !!! Your tip has worked great and the error has completely disappeared, now you can play properly on the keyboard again

I screwed until late into the night, that was about 40 screws that you had to screw off and back on: p
For safety, and also because a lot of dirt was seen in the interior of the keyboard, I cleaned the contact strips of all keys. I had to use several cotton swabs because they had accumulated plenty of black dirt.

So if someone also has the same problem with his keyboard, I recommend using Be-3's instructions to clean the contact strips, as you can not go wrong!

thanks for the info. I'll try cleaning tomorrow. my assumption was a mechanical problem resulting in an electronic error - why only certain notes in all octaves misbehave seems awfully strange. thanks!

"why only certain notes in all octaves misbehave seems awfully strange."

If some special keys F,G,A - the same! - for.ex misbehave in ALL OCTAVES!

Is a sign that there is an electronic or computer error. Impossible that just F,G,A are dirty in all octaves.

I tell you for the last time: Call a musicstore and describe exactly that:
"why only certain notes in all octaves :!: :!: :!: misbehave seems awfully strange."
:!:

It´s not strange...when it is an electronic/computerproblem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please try to describe the problem exactly. Also for the musicstore.

PROBLEM : the keys c c# d d# e f f# dont work with the f sometimes working.
A)....ON ALL OCTAVES THE SAME KEYS!?!( ... or B) not on all octaves the same?)

So! Is it DIRT B)...or A).. an ELECTRONIC/ COMPUTERPROBLEM?

It could be as simple as some bad connections, so ensure all connectors from the keyboard to the circuit boards are sound

Could be wrong but I am assuming what Steve meant by "in all octaves" was that changing octave up or down and pressing the same keys they still do not sound?

To me that says a "contact" problem nothing else. If they were working before dismantling and are not working now then logically it would point to something not seating properly on reassembly?

the keys c c# d d# e f f# dont work with the f... sometimes working.

That "sometimes" is really curios, but only a loose contact ... as Derek suspected?

thanks everyone for your help. I have the keyboard working properly now, what had happened was that one of the ribbon connectors had become partially dislodged from the board so once it was firmly plugged in its was fine. I did a thorough cleaning as well and it seems to do the trick now
much thanks

That's what I suspected. Glad it is working again. It is a mighty synth.
