Loading voices individually from bonus discs

Unread post by andrew95 » Sat Feb 10, 2018 12:44 am

Hi Guys, I'm new here and have a question. Sorry if it's so basic...When I'm in the DISK mode and trying to load a voice, how can i select a specific one and then assign it. Can't figure this out!
Thanks

Hello, and welcome.

The manual is your friend ... when you know where to look. :)

Check out Page 266 [F3]: VCE (Voice), which shows that, as well as loading the file in one go, you can select a single voice from the file and the destination voice that will be overwritten.

If you don't have a paper copy of the manual, simple Google "Yamaha EX5 PDF" to find an electronic one.

thanks.

i've been on pg 266 to no avail, unfortunately.

maybe my bonus disk is corrupt or not properly formatted?

in NO WAY whatsoever am i able to move the cursor down from "VCE 001:"

in no way can i see the lower part of what's on the screen on pg 266-- the names of the sounds on the disk and the potential places to save it.

it doesn't exist whatsoever.

wonder your thoughts, thanks!

Dumb Question. What file type are you trying to select from?

In my reply above, I (mistakenly) assumed an S1V (Voice) file. If there is no file name showing to the right of "VCE 001:" then you have no file selected and thus will not be able to cursor down.

If you have an S1Y file, then you would use DISK/LOAD SYN (F2:). For some reason, the EX5 does not let you "look inside" S1A files.

If you wish to copy voices from the comfort of your computer, then you could check out my ex.factory librarian (see x.factory link in my signature).

Yeah, but that's on page 265!

Yeah, but that's on page 565!
I presume you mean Page 265? :)

My point was that you can "look inside" S1Y (SYN) and S1V (VCE) files to select individual voices and performances for loading, but the EX5 (or at least mine) does not allow you to do that on S1A (ALL) files

I got your point, Derek.

I was just a tad sarcastic about our new member looking at p. 266 as suggested, but not at p. 265 where the load options from a 'ALL' file are shown...

Ah, but I did tell him to look at P266 for VCE. My bad assumption, especially when he was talking about bonus disks which usual have an S1A and an S1Y file

Yes, of course I've been on pg 265 as well. Actually the entire disk function chapter till I'm blue in the face before posting.

No matter what I do I can't see specific voices from which to choose from. Clearly I'm not up for this. I've heard about librarians where these things can get sorted out. Maybe that's what I have to do.

I'm very frustrated and have decided to hire someone to help me. Don't understand why EX5er would use this as an opportunity to make a joke on someone who is seriously focused on trying to solve these issues. The Facebook group for Ex seems to be more kind.

Sorry EXer, I'm a composer with a background in classical clarinet, not in synths. I heard there are bonus sounds I thought would help me put new life into my EX5. You can hear something I made a number of years ago with this beautiful instrument:

That was only a bit teasing without malice

As Derek pointed out, an EX can load a single voice from a 'SYN' (.s1y) or from a 'VCE' (.s1v) file, but NOT from a 'ALL' (.s1a) file.
Could you check which type of file you're dealing with?

Another possibility to explore is the OS version of your EX.
I remember that an earliest OS version had a bug which prevented it to load a single voice.
Could you check? (press VOICE+H+8)

Appreciate it, thanks. Tomorrow when I go into the office I'll check the OS. Sounds like that very well could be the answer. Based upon my experience so far, updating the OS sounds like it would be a nightmare as well.

If OS needs to be upgraded, is this something that can be downloaded and put on the USB thumb drive and then be loaded (via the USB emulator) onto the EX5? If yes, where can one get the download? Do they charge for this or is it a free upgrade?
Thanks

I’m afraid the OS is a ROM upgrade and not easily available unless you can source and burn your own ROMs.

Your next step I think is to check the OS version as suggested. Also can you confirm the full name of the file you are trying to load single voices from?

If ROM version is the issue, then there are other options to do this if you have a MIDI interface. Not only my librarian (a modest cost), but we could show you how to use Jima’s ExplorEX to do it for free.

We're talking about Yamaha 'Bonus Voice and Sample Pack', right?

Just checked a couple of those bonus disks.

Seems the 'Voice disks' are .s1a files. Which is a shame. They should have provided them as .s1y files.

The solution is to backup the EX, to load the whole Voice disk at once, to save the data as SYN, to restore the backup, then to load individual voices from the SYN file.
