Seems the 'Voice disks' are .s1a files. Which is a shame. They should have provided them as .s1y files.
Sorry, not quite true.

Absolutely true.

And there are no such disks as EXVD04...011.

I have the original Yamaha Bonus Voice & Sample Pack. There are 2 sorts of disks :

Voice disks, which have a grey label bearing the indication "VOICE DISK":

EX-VD01 Movie Textures
EX-VD02 Super Syn
EX-VD03 Analog Inspiration

All the Voice disks are .s1a files.

Voice and sample disks, which have a white label bearing the indication "VOICE+SAMPLE DISK":

EX-SVD01 HipHop
EX-SVD02 Choir&Voices #1
EX-SVD02 Choir&Voices #2
EX-SVD03 Electric Organ
EX-SVD04 Super EP
EX-SVD05 Best FM
EX-SVD06 Accordion, Flute, Violin...
EX-SVD07 GM-Instruments

Most of them are not .s1a files, but they are not "Voice disks" stricto sensu.

A fair point albeit a fine distinction, at least now the OP knows he has an option which is what this is really about, don't you think?

As far as I'm aware JRE stands for "Java Runtime Environment" - so it seems as if there's an issue with your Java installation...

Please check the version of your installed Java Runtime Environment - maybe you need to update. See here for further details:

thanks i actually now got this to work

the problem is, i think, that my OS needs to be upgraded. i have no idea how to do this

EX-5/5R/7 Main1 (L) V1.11 XT350I01:
EX_5-5R-7 Main1 (L) V1.11 XT350I01.zip
(369.97 KiB) Downloaded 267 times
EX-5/5R/7 Main2 (H) V1.11 XT351I01:
EX_5-5R-7 Main2 (H) V1.11 XT351I01.zip
(355.51 KiB) Downloaded 225 times
EX-5/5R/7 TG1 (L) V1.14 XT352206:
EX_5-5R-7 TG1 (L) V1.14 XT352206.zip
(387.22 KiB) Downloaded 228 times
EX-5/5R/7 TG2 (H) V1.14 XT353206:
EX_5-5R-7 TG2 (H) V1.14 XT353206.zip
(373.96 KiB) Downloaded 230 times
Enjoy.

i found these links you posted a while back

when i try to download any of these zip files and put them on my thumb drive (i'm using a usb floppy emulator) it just says "illegal disk"

so, how does one upgrade the OS?

thanks for your help.

Assuming that it was indeed an issue with early ROMS then yes this would help. Note that you need to be confident you can remove and install chips from their sockets - or get an electronics repair workshop to do it for you.

The sellling of ROMS on eBay is probably a grey area - Yamaha used to sternly protect their IP (they refused when those of us at EX5Tech offered to run a “not for profit” ROM burning service” about ten years ago when Yamha could no longer offer the upgrades themselves). But if that is the only way to get the upgrade now then Yamaha can’t really complain about people selling these now.

Thanks for the purchase of ex.factory. If you have it working now that is good. Let me know if you have problems. Details on how to request support are on the support page on my website.

It was. IIRC that was fixed in 1.0A

Ta. Never came across it myself as I never had an OS that early, and of course I use ex.factory to sort my voices! :)

wondering if someone wouldn't mind please telling me how to format a USB thumb drive so it will work on the EX5? there's an app i downloaded but it's so crazy and like Greek to figure out how to do this. if someone could explain this to me on a very, very basic level i'd really appreciate it.

if i can do that then i can load "ORGAN.S1A" from the bonus disk file onto the thumb drive and then at least load all data and at least audition the sounds for now. while I wait to upgrade my ROM

thanks

There's NO native way to connect an USB device to a 'genuine' EX! If you want to use an USB thumb stick you may look here:

viewtopic.php?f=55&t=7440

MAYBE such floppy emulator will work with an EX5 too...

I "think" he is already using a floppy emulator?

I am guessing the USB drive will nee formatting to FAT32? If that is the case then it depends on what version OS is being used, Win7, Win10, Mac OS etc as the process is different for each. It was relatively easy with Win7 but in Win10 there is only the cmd line method or a third party app that can do it.

Andrew can you let us know which computer OS you are using?
