Hello all
I have a prosaic question. What is it for, or rather, what can be mounted instead of plug, which I marked with a red arrow?

I searched the manual and there is nothing about this part unfortunately :(

It is apparently a slot for a planned “Mlan” interface. I’ve no idea what Mlan is, but it became popular on the Motif range, the brochures were always bloody going on about it.

Anyhow, the EX5 version was never released.

Xander is correct. It was for the mLAN expansion, which was Yamaha's specification for Audio and MIDI over Firewire, which was released around 2000.

They wanted it to replace MIDI in its ubiquity and made it an open standard. But it never really caught on at the time and poor support killed it around 2008.

Where Xander is not quite correct :) is that it was released for the EX5, but the EX5 mLAN only ever appeared in Japan for a short period of time (see this Post ). From memory, if you wanted mLAN you also had to send in your EX5 to Yamaha for hardware mods.

The following qoute is a Google translation from Japanese from this page confirms that my recollection is correct (I was questioning it until I found this! :) ).

The issue with mLAN for the EX5 was that the EX5 was released in 1998, so was probably on the drawing board in 1996 and it pre-dated mlAN's actual release.
