EX5/EX5R Firmware . . . .

Unread post by parametric » Thu Jul 26, 2018 1:35 am

I just noticed THIS: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-EX5-E ... Sw5ZBWOmER

Whilst browsing for something completely different, and thought it might be of interest to someone in here?

Back then year 1999, Yamaha provided firmware updates by exchanging Chips in the post. From what I remember above C update the update was not worth the hassle.

Selling firmware on e*bay is intellectual property and copyright infringement.

As much as I believe flexibility is needed and appreciated as regards mutual support between musicians when it comes to old gear which is no more supported by its manufacturer, I strongly disapprove of making a business out of selling firmware on e*bay.

He ended the listing but had sold around £450 worth before that.

Although I don't speak for Yamaha I am pretty sure they would not mind people helping each other out with firmware upgrades for kit that has long since been discontinued. Yamaha themselves are not able to provide the service and I think...if I remember correctly, Derek contacted them about this some time ago and they had no objection?

However I am absolutely sure they would take a very different view of someone copying their firmware or software and "selling" for profit online! Have to differentiate here from people providing a service to help others and simply covering costs, as long as Yamaha are made aware and agree to it of course.

This stuff will always be out there because there is always someone with the right equipment who is willing to copy it and make it available. It's really up to each person to make their own call about whether they want to make use of such a service.

Agreed. The Ebay offerings are copyright theft as they are making money out of it.

Yamaha in the end did let us post the binary images for the ROMs.
