Leave on all the time?

Unread post by azrevasive » Wed Feb 13, 2019 3:01 pm

Hi all, glad to see a community still around for the EX!! My first post... I joined to ask a question but I figured it out as I was posting.

I have both EX7 and EX5R. The EX5R is fully loaded but I haven't changed the flash since my last PC crashed. I did not bother with another ex.Factor license so not much patch changing going on. Anyway, I leave both synths on all the time, plugged into a surge protector. Mostly just because there is usually a pattern or arpeggio might be in there but not save worthy.

Are there any long-term repercussions by leaving them on all the time? Does everyone else to the same? Will the battery last longer?

Thank you!!

Welcome <azr>

We have quite few EX users in here - they'll be right along, for sure . . . . .

IME, Electronic Stuff likes to be "on" - and in use . . .

What it does not like - is to be shut away in a cupboard, loft or garage for 5 years and then switched on . . .

There may be others in here that can enlarge on this - but that's MY take on it . . .

Hi azrevasive, welcome to the forums :)

I'm with Chris on this one. As long as you have good air circulation around your gear the only thing it will hurt leaving them switched on is your wallet for the electricity bill ;)

Not really. They don't consume huge amounts of power, and leaving them on removes the power-on surge which is quite a stress point for electronics (and for some, power off). Your battery will not last any longer, it is not charged by the EX. The display may fade a little quicker, both filament bulbs and LED's have a finite life. For myself, I don't leave the EX5 on all the time as I don't use it every day. If I did, I would leave it on. Electronics do tend to last longer if not power-cycled frequently e.g. daily. Power supplies are a high-stress item so reducing power-cycles helps prolong their life. All in all it is a trade-off, some components do not react well to having no power for long periods of time e.g. electrolytic capacitors but we are talking years here, not weeks or months. If you are happy leaving them on all the time then why not?
