EX5 Derek, from the previous century to 2019 ! We are still alive!!

Unread post by NewAlex » Sun Apr 14, 2019 12:04 pm

English not first language but hopefully you will understand me.

I have found these forums by chance. Then I saw the name "Derek Cook" and reminded me the years from 1999 when we were online in other forums up to ski's ex5tech which is neglected today ! SCSI interfaces, ZIP drives, Floppy Disks, Yamaha updates by exchanging Chips in the post !!!... hell... what an era.... Flash memory which costed a fortune for just 8MB or 16MB !!!!!

I have since packed my EX5 in a store room, I tried to sell it, but finally I didn't make the step. Today I have decided to dust it down, 20 years later!!!

Back then, I was being banned by every forum administrator due to my rebellious reactions to everything. People just didn't like it. Ski made sure that I would not register with other names and blocked all the possible IPs I could have access from. VPNs were not known at that age !!!

20 years have passed. Our youth lost. We are trying to maintain our health and continue to enjoy what we haven't managed to achieve these years.

I have discovered these forums when searching for the factory disks. I have lost all the extras, CDs, floppies, zip drive, SCSI cables.

Lucky to find you !

Hello, Alex

I do indeed remember you and I will provide you a welcome to this forum, but also comment (seeing as you mentioned it), that Ski did indeed ban you from EX5Tech, but had good reason for doing so, and other mods, myself included, were in agreement with his decision at the time.

That was of course 15-20 years ago and in the past. This forum is very similar to EX5Tech in ethos and openness. We invite constructive debate and informed opinion, but rebellious tirades are not welcome.

Hopefully today you'll still find the EX5 as powerful now as it was back then. I sold my EX5 boards, but still have an EX5R.

EX5Tech has been dead for a number of years because Ski's work/life balance is as stupid as it ever was and his interest is in other synths these days - what spare time he does have is usually spent patch programming for Dave Smith of DSI fame.

Jima and myself have set up a sister site http://www.ex5tech.co.uk/ which collates all of the EX5 resources and an archive of the old forum. So there is plenty there to reminisce on and to feed into your EX5.
Regards
Derek Cook

Welcome to yamahamusicians.com Alex :)

Thanks also for being honest about the past. 20 years is a long time and of course people change and mellow over time, I know I have.

Check out the forum rules here viewtopic.php?f=75&t=5958 and if you use them as a guide you will be fine :)

Things sure change. If only I'd kept more of my old tech from 20 years ago. Well it was hard to justify at the time as it was worn out and there wasn't a ton of space.

Yeah there is a lot of gear I got rid of which I wish I had kept. It was always a matter of space or lack of it. I could never have kept all the keyboards I have owned. There would be at least 40 of them by now. I would need a small warehouse!

Guitars on the other hand are much easier to keep. I only have six at the moment but they don't take up much room. I definitely could not have six keyboards!

When It takes me three hours to set up on stage before sound check in Welsh Floyd (keys, lights, bailing other people out using my “emergency box”) and half as long to pack up, I sometimes wish I only played harmonica or Stylophone! ;)

Ahh the simplicity of the acoustic guitar Derek :) Take it out of the case, check the tuning and away you go! :music-guitarred:

Of course that doesn't help if you are a keyboard player :confusion-confused:

Hello again.

Thanks all for welcoming me!. People have already recognized me. Not interested in repeating the behaviour of the past. I was never a bad person of course. Some hard beliefs kept me hostile though.

Today and after 20 years I am more diplomatic and understanding with others. I don't have 2 faces. I am both straight and humane at the same time which help others to easily trust me. Of course today I prefer peace, time is limited, bills are high, payroll is not the best option but the only one!.

Anyway.... Back to the discussion,

I lost all the accessories of my EX5R (probably somebody from my family threw the pack in the bin), including the breath controller. But anyway, who needs ZIP drives or SCSI devices today !!! Floppy disk I think is enough to play around!

I play the real saxophone I have a Tenor Yamaha YTS62 sax and a Yanagisawa Soprano. I always had problems with practicing because I live in an apartment. I removed clothes from a cabinet and use it as a booth for sound Isolation.

My gear is pretty old. Still using a Yamaha P80 electric piano from 1998! It plays good. I don't feel bad and I don't need to change it ! It plays ok and the keys feel like a real piano!

My Korg pa50 needs a change though but I am waiting some business in live performance in order to justify something better!

Lattest addition was a VoiceLive 2 by tc-hellicon.

I use the above to color my real saxophone sound. I am using a good DPA microphone (bought it some years ago)

I plan to buy a Roland electric saxophone (Roland Aerophone ae10 or GO 05) to help me in practicing with headphones.

I don't make money from music. I plan to find people to form a real jazz orchestra as I am less and less interested in electronic music programming though I am a Computer Programmer.

This is essentially the forum for ex5tech.co.uk so it works well for both sites :)

Hi <NewAlex>,

Noise has always been a bugbear for Musicians - especially those playing REAL Pianos, most of the "Horns"

and Drums (of course) ;)

As you are a Sax player, I would be interested on your "take" on the midi varients from a player's POV . .

I have a mate who plays Sax who lives in Cornwall here in the UK - in quite a remote House, and so

has no limitations that you describe about playing, but he has NO inclination to try a midi controller . . .

All the peripheral "Midi-Glitz" aside, do you consider it is possible to be as expressive on a controller

as it it is on a real Sax - or is it all Manufacturer Rhetoric?

The Akai keys are all non-moving (touch-sensitive) for instance? - could be unsettling for a REAL player?

Have you looked at the Akai EWI instruments at all?

Some years ago I posted on YouTube some items about the EWI1000 and the EVI1000 . . .

OK, these are superceded these days, but do give an idea of what is possible - with practice . . .

This vid. shows both in use: Sorry for the quality of the original VHS . . . .

Any opinion?

I'm not a wind player BTW - my last experience was with a Flute in the School Orchestra c. 1965 :o

I never realized what a joy a saxophone was to play till I tried the modeled VL, it is such an expressive instrument with its growl and brilliance. It tempts me to want to try to pick up the real thing, but I from what I hear it takes quite awhile to produce good sound with it, who knows how well I'd do so I'll probably stick with the virtual saxophone. :D
