TX81Z Memory Expansion?

Unread post by pmj » Sat Apr 14, 2018 4:33 pm

I think the answer to this is “no” but...

Apart from the ultra rare TZQuad board, is there any way of expanding the available user memory in the TX81Z?

I’ve always thought it was shame that you have four banks of 32 voices but only one of those is for user edited voices.

Any one know of any expansion options / modifications?

I have an editor on my Windows PC for the TX81Z that does a nice job of swapping banks of 32 patches in and out. You might consider that route since there really aren't any expansion options available.

Thanks, I already do that but was hoping for a more permanent hardware option. Guess there isn’t anything currently out there?

What is the name of that editor for patch memory? And what is the TZquad board?

I use this one: https://mgregory22.me/tx81z/programmer.html

Links to the little bit of info there is on the TZ Quad in the first post.

PMJ,

I have a TZQuad board in my TX81z but it came with the unit when I bought it many years ago now used via eBay. It works very well but I have no clue where you might find one now other than eBay.

Your best bet might be to find another TX81z WITH a TZQuad board already installed and then keep the original for spares or sell it to recoup your purchase of the second one.

Also, It has been a while since I edited voices on my TX81z but I thought one could edit the current voice in the User area and save it to one of the 32 memory slots over-writing one there....

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a TX81Z with the TZ Quad board installed for sale, will certainly keep an eye out.

You can use the voices in banks A-C as the basis for a new sound but you can only store any edits in the I bank in slots 1 to 32. The A-C voices are stored on a ROM chip and can’t be overwritten unfortunately.

>>I bank in slots 1 to 32

Well, that is what I was suggesting. Edit a voice and save it to one of those 32 slots. the TXQuad only gives you 4 banks instead of 1 to save edited voices to.

Also, if you are interested, there are some posts out there where some folks have developed real-time parameter change interfaces that allow some of the voice parameters to be changes on the fly as you perform. I never did this for mine but a google search may turn up plans and parts lists for these real-time parameter change interface add-ons.

Cheers,

That’s kind of what I was driving at, sorry if it wasn’t clear.

I find only having the I bank a bit restrictive and was interested to know if there’s anything like the TZQuad around these days that can expand the available user memory. I’m often swapping banks of 32 voices back and forth using the editor or sysex librarian as I run out of room. Be nice to keep more things in place on the machine.

pmj,

I hear you. I was very happy to get the TZQuad included in mine when I bought it used off eBay. I have an original DX7 and an FB-01 but wanted a TX81z to play CC#02 (breath control) voices with a WX-7 windcontroller. It does well with that. My DX7 has a Gray Matter E! card which does even more for my DX7. Back in the day, there were quite a few companies making add-on or enhancement products for FM synths but most all have gone out of business as the industry has moved on. And of course the whole software synth revolution has also had it's impact.

Best of luck finding what you need.
