DX5 newbie

Unread post by servicesound »

Hello Yamaha lovers.

I've just taken in a slightly sick DX5.
Powers up ok, says it needs a new battery so I'm sure i can sort that out.....but....no sound output....possible that all the presets have left the building? I don't have any carts so after I've done the battery (and tempted also to puchase the v6 firmware eprom thats on Reverb/ebay), does alone know how i get sound back??!! many thanks.

Congratulations on the DX5! Not very many of those around. I would guess the synth has just lost it's settings, hence no sound output. You could go in and program in a voice, pick an algorithm, give a carrier operator a frequency and an amplitude, turn up the volume, and it should give you a sound.

Has anyone reading this tried a battery replacement?

Ah....thank you!!!

That's a great start for me.....I'll try the battery first...looks from your pic like its a 2032 with tags on..assuming pcb solder time.

Yes, it's a 2032 with solder tags - but I highly recommend to solder a holder to the mainboard instead of the new battery. Makes swapping a lot easier in future if the need arises...

Apologies.....I was naturally assuming you were in the UK because of your perfect English writing!!!

CPC is an electronics online retailer (part of Farnell) in the UK so I was after your tips there for a supplier for the coin cell holder!

Cool buy i had once one of these, change the battery and see what happens next use the method with cables and a holder for CR 2032 outside of the mainboard i think it better this way especially if you cant find one with legs.
