DX7 mk1 Membrane replacement

Unread post by paulr »

Hi Guys and Girls

I have a DX7 mk1, and the front panel membrane is starting to crack.
I am considering having a new one made professionally to replace the
original.
I have a couple of questions

1 Would anybody else be interested, if so how much would you be
prepared to pay?

2 Are there any extra marking that would be useful (Special Edition
ROM functions for instance) ?

There were 180,000+ DX7's sold, there are probably more than 1/2 of
these still in use, there must be a good proportion of these that
have started to crack, if the quantities are high enough the cost
could become quite small.
I am proceeding with the enquiries based on my requirements and will
report back when I have some more information

Cheers

Paul

My first question would be does Yamaha stock the membrane anymore?

Hi Clyde,

I has seen posts saying that Yamaha had long since stopped supplying it....but I have not asked first hand !

I will have a go at the guy who supplied me with the Special Edition ROM.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,
It's entirely possible that Yamaha has stopped supplying the membrane, I just thought I'd ask as it would be a lot of effort to get some made up (and could be costly) and unnecessary if Yamaha was still suplying them.

hi Clyde,
I just got a reply back from Yamaha UK, (no it hasn't taken 3 years ! :o)), and they have confirmed that they do not stock the membrane any longer.
I did a quick bit of arithmatic as follows
180,000 DX7's made ( I think I read that somewhere but it might include some of the later models)
25% still in use (just a wild off the bat figure) = 45,000
10% of these have cracks in the membrane = 4500
10% of these have owners who can be bothered to change the membrane = 450

All figures up for discussion/argument, but I would like to see what the actual interest is.
I have opened up discussions with a manufacturer using these figures, I'll let you know if i get a resonse.
What do you think ?
Cheers

Paul

Hi,

I remember when I wanted to 'do up' a mark 1 DX7, I ordered what I thought was a new membrane from Yamaha - and was pleasantly surprised when I received a complete new top panel (with membrane attached). I think it cost something like £50 or £60 about 15 years ago?

These are long since out of stock, but I could be interested in one or two spare membranes if this ever gets off the ground. I think the most obvious omission from standard DX7's is the word "MIDI" on button 8 !!

As a guide price?? Difficult to say, but given that I have bought complete DX7's off Ebay for less than £40 in the past.....

Good luck PaulR and please keep us posted!

Hi iixorbiusii,
Thanks for your reply, I had a call today from one of the companies that I asked for quotes from, and he was talking about printing on the rear of some polycarbonate material. Apparently it is some sort of inkjet process, so there would be no real setup charge or minimum quantity. I don't have pricing yet, and I think I would like to see a sample first.
I agree button 8 needs marking up as wel as 11 for formatting cartridges (I always forget !) and 13 for the stuff in the Special Edition Rom.
More later
Cheers

There are many, many DX7 expansions. I can think of 4 off the top of my head not including the SER. So, you could have some market there, not sure.

Having said that, very many DX7's are parted out and you probably can buy a whole metal top or chassis if you look hard enough. Folks that have been making membrane's for the Kiwi Techniques upgrades seem to not last too long, so that's not encouraging. Kind of like the wood side panels makers. They seem to come and go rather quickly too.

Hi,

I would like to replace the top membrane on my DX7 Mk1 also. One of my buttons has cracked (I think its #18).

There's a guy on eBay from London (Northolt Music I think he is called). He sells DX7 spares at rip-off prices! I emailed him a couple of times and he promised me a DX7 cheek. Then he blanked my emails and so the part (on eBay) for twice what we had initially agreed upon.

Ta,

Paul

Isn't is just a plastic sheet that has been screen printed or some such? Can't imagine the materials would be expensive, it's the printing bit that might be a bit more difficult.

Hi Saul,

Yes, I guess that just about sums up what the membrane consists of.

But still, would it only be cheap if mass-produced?

Paul

The sheet itself would not be expensive. Is the printing for the buttons on the plastic or on the body of the DX7?

It would be great if someone was able to produce an affordable solution. I myself asked Yamaha a couple of years ago, over the phone, when I first bought the synth. As mentioned above, they showed no signs of interest - which is totally understandable.
