DX7IID 'Cool Blue' upgrade...

Unread post by Miks » Tue Oct 25, 2016 10:54 pm

Hi folks,

today I took my DX7IID apart - the keybed needed some cleaning. So I took out the keybed, removed and cleaned every single key and reassembled the keybed. What a job - pheeew! But the synth was in need of this work! Now the keys are looking shiney as new (apart from the small scratches of course...).

Whilst the synth was open I decided to give it a 'Cool Blue' update - I ordered three displays a few days ago (coming from China) which arrived yesterday. Here's the story:

On the DX7's LED board I desoldered the 10 Ohm resistor sitting in line with the 5V power line (coming from the psu) and firing the LED backlight of the genuine display - but the 'Cool Blue' was too bright so I soldered two 100 Ohm resistors in parallel to get 50 Ohm which is much better.

Next thing was to desolder the 10K Ohm resistor (also on the DX7's LED board, for contrast) and have a potentiometer instead so I could easily adjust the contrast of the new display.

The new 'Cool Blue' under test conditions... works absolutely amazing!

Do you think with all of our hard work that manufacturers will now fit cool blue as standard? So far, only my Novation Remote keys came with a blue LCD!

Maybe some of them may think about it - but I suppose the most of them will do it 'Old School' - as usual...

That's a great piece of work there Arne . . . .

How did you cite the edge pot? . . . A small slot in the case at the back perhaps?

No Chris - that pot was only 'for testing purposes' - I made another 'construction' and now it looks the same as the contrast pot on my SY99... I'll post some pics...

As promised - some pictures of my 'hand-crafted' contrast potentiometer...

First I cut off two pieces from a metal handle (from an old lamp), drilled 4 holes and tapped a thread into each hole. Then I took a small piece of breadboard and mounted the metal 'holders', the potentiometer (Alps, 10k Ohm, linear) and a small connector.
