Casio CT-X700 - A Lot of keyboard for a small price!

CTX-800 Includes Pitch Bend Wheel - Not Available in the UK
Casio recently announced a new line of portable keyboards that pack in a lot of features and great sounds for a very affordable price.

First of these is the CT-X700 which is powered by Casio's new AiX sound source and from what I have heard so far this raises the bar for what you can expect from an entry level keyboard. In fact the CT-X700 is not just "entry level" in fact it would be great for anyone of any level who is looking for a new value for money keyboard.

I should have this in for review soon but in the meantime check out the video below to give you an idea of the features and the sound quality.

I've always maintained that Casio are generally not taken seriously by the mainstream -

for reasons that are largely indeterminable . . . .

They have produced some great sounding boards over the years, and the CT-X700 looks to continue

that progression.

From the demo at least, it sounds great.

The only downside for me is the lack of traditional midi ports.

Surely, another 10 Quid on the price would have sorted that - and it would still be amazing value?

If you already have "a rig", then doesn't "USB to device" force it to be your master keyboard when you may already have decided on something else?

Am I perhaps wrong here? USB midi is relatively new to me - having been brought up with conventional DIN-Midi.

Is is possible (or even desirable) to have multiple class-compliant USB-to-device items connected to one computer?

Well this is the entry level in the range so yes, usb midi only. The CT-X3000 (£299) and CT-X5000 (£400) do have proper midi ports. By the way those prices are way above what they cost in the USA.

The CT-X700 featured in this thread actually costs $175 so we "should" see it here in the UK for around £125 but somehow that has magically bloomed into £202 or thereabouts. Still great value but much better value across the pond.

CT-X series

A little more about the CT-X Series from Casio.

All four keyboard models from the CT-X line - CT-X5000, CT-X3000, CT-X800 and CT-X700 - boast the new AiX* Sound Source, leveraging expertise that CASIO accumulated in developing sound sources for digital pianos. The new sound source reproduces the characteristic sound of acoustic instruments and is eight times more powerful than comparable precursor models in similar price ranges.

A special focus during development was the natural sound behaviour of acoustic instruments such as pianos, strings, wind instruments and drums. Furthermore the brand new audio-system of CT-X5000 and CT-X3000 creates an impressively powerful sound.

More features of the new CT-X700 and CT-X800 are: 600 tones, 195 rhythms, synchro stop rhythm controller, tap tempo function und registration freeze button. Furthermore, the CT-X800 is equipped with a USB-to-device port and a pitch bend wheel.

The models CT-X5000 and CT-X3000 have 800 tones, 235 rhythms and numerous features to realize own song ideas and arrangements such as a tone-editor, a pattern sequencer and a phrase recorder with four pads.

The CT-X700 (RRP 249.00 €) will be available from the middle of February 2018 and the CT-X800 (RRP 299.00 €) will be available from the middle of March 2018 in specialist shops.

The price for the CT-X3000 is £299 and the CT-X500 £400 in the UK. Correct at the time this thread was published but obviously subject to change.

That's fair enough Saul (I hadn't looked at the entire range).

Most entry level users I'm sure will be delighted to be able to additionally connect to a computer,

though I suspect many will simply enjoy playing it as a keyboard . . .

Job done, and brilliant value . . .

I can certainly envisage the X700 appearing in Argos' catalogue . . .perhaps some of the higher spec ones too?

Casio are sending me the CT-X700 so will be interesting to hear and play it here. I have a feeling it is going to punch above it's weight. Will do a video review for this one :)

Yes, the CT-X700 has some nice MIDI capabilities, too-- better than Yamaha's PSR-E models. Historically, Casio's low-end CTK/WK keyboards didn't have the ability to respond to CC messages for things like Attack Time, Release Time, Filter Cutoff, and Filter Resonance, which are standard on the PSR-E models. But the CT-X700 can respond to the following CC messages (in addition to the usual ones):

- Portamento Time (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Portamento Switch (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Sostenuto (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Soft Pedal (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Filter Resonance
- Release Time
- Attack Time
- Filter Cutoff
- Decay Time (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Vibrato Rate (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Vibrato Depth (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Vibrato Delay (not available on the PSR-E models)
- Portamento Control
- Reverb Send Level
- Chorus Send Level
- Delay Send Level (not available on the PSR-E models)

So the CT-X700 could actually be used as a nice little inexpensive sound module, complete with better "synthy" features than Yamaha's inexpensive PSR-E line.

Thanks for that info Michael. I have a feeling the CT-X range might be a bit of a game changer for Casio.

I think the picture in the first post is probably the CT-X800, not the CT-X700. Casio has posted the User's Guide for the CT-X800, which appears to be about the same as the CT-X700 as far as tones, rhythms, etc., but with a little more-- including a pitch bend wheel, which the CT-X700 lacks. I don't see the CT-X800 at any online stores yet, but I'm sure it will cost a bit more than the CT-X700.

The CT-X800 will not be available in the UK for some reason. I'm guessing because it is so close to the CT-X700 in spec...which as far as I can tell only includes the pitch bend wheel. In fact I am not sure why they started with the CT-X700 as it would have made more sense to start the range with a keyboard that does include pitch bend.

The CT-X700 is available to buy online here in the UK it's just a shame we pay a lot more for it than our US cousins. Currently it is selling fo £209. It is still a great sounding entry level keyboard for that money but would have been even nicer were it closer to the US price of just $179.
