Casio FZ-1/VZ-1 Aftermarket screen?

Casio have made some great keyboards over the years and not always received the credit they deserved. If you have a Casio this is your section. Post your reviews, questions and opinions here.

Casio FZ-1/VZ-1 Aftermarket screen?

Unread post by Rara » Wed Apr 04, 2018 12:40 am

casio_fz1.png
Casio FZ1
I contacted Newhaven last week and asked about the possibility
of producing an aftermarket screen for the FZ-1 (I also mentioned FZ-10 and FZ-20)(i forgot to mention Hohner HS-1)

Their reply was;
Unfortunately we have not had many request to consider producing a compatible LCD screen for a Casio FZ-1 keyboard
and its rack mount versions the FZ-10 and FZ-20.
We would have to see considerable amount demand for us to consider producing such a display.

We can possible do a custom display as an option, this would require an estimated ~3K-4K MOQ ad a tooling fee.
They do a 128x64 screen, not a 96x64 unfortunately
http://www.newhavendisplay.com/nhd12864 ... p-505.html

It may be possible if enough interest in generated. pass it on ...
Send them an email and ask about a new screen if you have any of these
Synths.

Cheers.
Rara :-)

Edit:(Title) It is likely the Casio VZ-1 and VZ-10M use the same type of LCD screen So this could also apply to owners of those units as well.

Making an interface adapter for modern 128x64 lcd modules seems to be a more promising solution. It requires to do some reverse engineering on FZ/VZ display, and design a simple board with MCU or CPLD. But again, how much people interested in that?

Welcome to the forum dmitrins :)

There are probably not many VZ-1's about these days. I don't think they sold well on release even though, as far as I am concerned it was at least a match for the DX7 if not better. The FZ-1 was more popular but again there probably were not that many sold...relatively speaking.

An adapted design would appear to be the only way forward, unless someone does manage to track down the right 128x64 LCD. I guess we need to know if it was used in anything else?

good idea how ever not easily do-able.
It would require major physical modifications to the existing space and front panel for the new screen to fit,
moving the keypad, value entry slider and sampling level slider. Or, moving all the buttons on the left of the screen.

or another other idea is to adapt an external programmer with a built in screen (with all the same buttons)
to sit on top of the existing space like a modern incarnation of a roland pg-200.

Pictures of the screen out of the synth if your interested. (its very primitive .... )

Guess it was fully custom design by Casio. There are similar design based on same chipset in their graphing calculators (casio fx7000 IIRC).
Actually I have all parts and tools to start this project myself but don't have FZ1 at this moment. Friend of mine asked me to repair totally broken ribbon cables, but I don't even want to try  , so if he doesn't find someone to fix it, may be he will borrow me the synth for my experiments :)

i mentioned the calculator in my resto thread for this synth. the screen itself is identical to the calculator.
I drew up a plan on paper a while ago with the intent of making a 3D model of the external programmer, calling it the "Hayworth FZ-P" :-D
That is as far as I could go with the idea, i don't have the space to fully dismantle it. nor all the tools rquired to build one
or make an adapter to go between the motherboard and new screen.

judging by the number of views this subject has and the views and links to external blogs and websites my resto thread
has generated, I would say there would be a lot of interest to say the least.

Thank you, I have read your thread. Well, I don't see any reasons to modify front panel, there is enough space for COG type LCD with small circuit board underneath. May be some brackets will be needed to fit all this stuff to original mounts.
Can someone tell me approximate dimensions of FZ's lcd assembly?

I can give you the dimensions from mine later on,
it's a delicate operation, with those ribbons cables glued to the screen.

size of plastic frame around LCD and viewing area would be especially interesting.

I forgot about butchy :-)
I've been looking at the service manual and searching the webs for lcds all day.
I did come across a listing for a 96x96 cog lcd, there no other details of that yet.
