Sunrise on Nephenee

Unread post by Derek » Sun Jan 21, 2018 9:12 pm

Hi, all

I thought it was about time I posted a new song that I am working on. Been too quiet for too long.....

Sunrise on Nephenee

This is a bit of a homage to Vangelis, inspired by the sounds available in UH-E Diva (Dinosaur Impersonating Virtual Analog!), which is providing that lush/iconic "Vangelis CS80 Brass".

The intro/foundation pad/arpeggio is my Yamaha Montage, and a particular patch that also put me in mind of Vangelis, with some subtle "washes" from another UH-E Diva instance and my trusty AN1x (a MarcE JP8000 patch). Around the 1.14 mark you have a KARMA pad/pattern coming in from my Kronos and an arpeggiated sequence from Roland Cloud's System 8 VSTi.

I probably need to work on this further as i think that the melody can be improved in places, but it's a starter for ten. :)

I used this to open a recent open mic session I attended, and it seemed to go down well.

Very nice indeed Derek :) I totally missed this post until this morning. Definitely recognise that Vangelis sound in there.

Would also be great to use that artwork as a projected backdrop on stage? The whole thing, music and artwork is very professional.

An interesting flavour-mix going on there Derek . . . . .

Shine on - and the Vangelian CS80. Those influences are always going to tick the boxes for me . . . .

I'm liking the other "Echoes" tracks too BTW. NICE moog lead patch, and the Hammond in-and-out rotary . . .

If I may observe . . . . . .during the lead guitar solos - try incorporating "occasional" arpeggio phrases

(on the chords being used) into the solo gtr . . . both "upwards" and "downwards" Much like Dave did on "Hello". .

IYSWIM :D

Solo example.jpg

A VERY simplified example . . . . But

Bar 3 and Bar 5 are essentially and arpeggio on E major . . . . This mixture of scale passages interspersed with arpeggios of the chord in use, adds interest - and are the essence of the great solos we love . . . (IMO)

Thanks, Saul, glad you like it.

The Artwork was created by "Torus", who created all of the EX5Tech, MarcE tribute and x.factory splash screens for me. Sadly he is not about (In a virtual sense) anymore, which is a huge shame as I can't draw for toffee! He did a great job on taking the Echoes name and turning it into artwork. At the time the band name was a working title and a possibility of one of many, but once Torus did that artwork, the name was fixed! :)

Thanks, Chris, glad you are enjoying it. I do need to work on my guitar playing, which is best described a s basic. I'm slowly getting back into guitar playing, so will look at your suggestion.

BTW in the other demos, the Moogish sounds are nearly always my Nord G2 Engine, which is still an amazing sounding VA.

I am listening to this right now (for the third time) and before I found this thread now I was thinking the beginning of this
sound a little like Vangelis's mutiny soundtrack. Or floating about the universe in Carl Sagans ship of the imagination.
Very Vangelis and I find it was a homage to him :) very well done.

Thanks very much, Rara

Glad you are enjoying it. Carl Sagan’s Cosmos (and the Vangelis music used in it) was a seminal program in my youth. That probably dates me!

I have always been in awe of Vangelis and how his sounds come from synthesisers, but they sound so organic. The man is a genius!

I also discovered a year or so back that another part of the Vangelis ”secret sauce” is the augmented 5th note (or a Lydian scale mode). Try it, especially the interval shift from augmented 5th to plain 6th. Instant Vangelis! :)

@Derek - Any chance you could upload the .mp3 now we can play them in-house?

Reverbnation is still there - but the direct link you posted doesn't work (for me) . . . . .

@Rara - I sang on that Vangelis Album (Heaven and Hell) with the ECC, back in the day.

It was an experience. THIS is what Nemo Studios looked like . . . . . (I've sat on that Sofa) :D

Link above is fixed. I used to have this on my Echoes page but moved it once I had my Spectral Streams page set up.
