Dartmoor Elegy . . . . .

Unread post by parametric » Thu Apr 26, 2018 1:34 am

Ok Guys . . . .

My Writer's Block took some time off, and I was able to finish the Lyrics for this . . . .

This is a kind of follow up to my "Little Grey House" Track.

I've made TWO separate versions, as I KNOW that opinions vary as to the desirability of drumkits in a track.

I'm of the opinion that BOTH versions stand up just fine on their own . . . they simply have a "different" Feel

I'll let you decide WHICH you prefer . . . . 8)

They are HERE: https://soundcloud.com/parametr1c/dartmoor-elegy10mp3 (WITH DrumKit)

https://soundcloud.com/parametr1c/dartm ... astoralmp3 (Pastoral version)

Instrumentation is different - in that there are No Guitars, No Synths here . . . .

It's entirely Orchestral - and represents my first attempt to use NI Kontakt5 VSTis as realistically as possible.

Programming the Articulations is a new area for me, and is not without difficulty.

There seem to be no shortcut except simply learning by USING . . . .

All instruments were played-in on my Fusion 8HD, and the multitrack midi file imported into Reaper.

All instruments are from the Kontakt5 Factory Library.

The Harp part was completely written-in, in the Piano Roll editor, and is shared between two Harp Tracks.

Other Instruments used are Strings Hi, Strings Lo, Flute, Oboe, Trumpet, French Horns, Tuba and Orchestral

Percussion - 4 tracks - Bell Shaker, Woodblock, Bass Drum Hit, and Drum Roll.

The Vocal was recorded into the Fusion via a Mike Preamp (Fusion Audio-ins are Line level) with a Shure SM58 at

24bit 44.1kHz and exported to Reaper as a Wav file. Small amounts of Compression, Reverb and EQ applied

Vocal Harmonies were "devised" in Reaper using ReaTune.

Oh, I like that.

The style is musical/film music (to my ears) and is better without the drum kit.
You could add classical percussion like timpani for building up to some of the highlights.
Go gentle though, this piece is all about melody and mood, IMO not so much about rhythm.

Well done, I enjoyed listening.

The percussion IS from the Kontakt Factory Library Orchestral Percussion (Bell Shaker, Woodblock, Drum Roll, Bass Drum).

The DrumKit in the other version is Manda MT-PowerDrums2 - which is excellent IMO
