Connecting a Yamaha Motif 8 and Sure SM58 mic to a Laptop?

Unread post by mayfly5 » Sun Nov 25, 2018 7:52 pm

I have a Motif 8 keyboard. An SM58 Mic. And an Acer Laptop.

1.) What do I need to connect them all together ?

2.) Is the SM58 suitable for recording to computer ?

3.) Is there any free software for a Newbie to record rough 'sketch' demos ?

Thanks. John.

Hi John, welcome to yamahamusicians.com :)

Well the good news is you have a great keyboard and mic. The slightly bad news is you will probably need to invest in a little more gear in order to connect them to your laptop and this will be in the form of an Audio/midi interface.

Having said that the Motif does have a usb connection so you can at least connect it to your laptop and use it as a MIDI controller. If you want audio as well though you need to go down the Audio Interface route as the USB connection on these older Motif's were for MIDI data only.

I use a Presonus Audiobox iTwo at the moment although I will be selling that soon. There are many other audio interfaces of course from people like Focusrite, Behringer, Tascam, Mackie and so on and something to suit every budget.

I assume you don't yet have such an interface for your laptop?

Hello Saul,

Thanks for your time. I appreciate your advice.
It sounds like I'm halfway there.
Would I need a mixer to sync my keyboard & audio interface into my laptop ?
Also, the lead from my SM58 is a GPO jack - I don't recognise those connections on the Presonus. (A new lead needed ?)

Thanks again Saul.

Hi John

Did you purchase an audio interface? Mine is up for sale. See this thread. viewtopic.php?f=22&t=12160

The connections you see on the Presonus Audiobox iTwo will take both XLR and standard 1/4" jack as on your Sure SM58 so no problems there :)

You would not need a mixer. The Presonus has standard din type midi input/outputs on the back...if you just wanted to record midi of course. Or you could take the Motif's audio outputs and feed them through the front of the Presonus to record audio.

The Presonus comes with Studio One Artist v4 which would take care of your recording needs. It's a very good package :)

Thanks again Saul,

Sounds good for me. I think. I didn't quite understand this bit: -
- - you could take the Motif's audio outputs and feed them through the front of the Presonus to record audio.

Can I not just connect my SM58 into the Presonus to record vocals/acoustic guitar ?

What price are you asking for this ?

Best, John

If you just wanted to record vocals and acoustic guitar then yes you would plug the mic into input one and your guitar to input 2. Or did you mean you were going to record vocals and guitar just through the SM58? You could definitely do that of course but it is not ideal because you would need to get the mic in the right position to pick up both the vocals and guitar. It would be a compromise at best which is why I use a matched pair of RODE M5 or Sennheiser e614's for the guitar and a RED AUDIO RV5 for vocals.

The two RODE or Sennheisers are pointed at around the 12th and 8th frets of the guitar and the vocal mic is set back around 50cm and just above my head...you won't see it in the review videos because it is out of shot.

I sold the Presonus yesterday so that is gone but any similar interface would work. Or if you want to record from a few sources at once then perhaps a usb mixer would be better suited for you.

Thanks Saul,

I would be recording acoustics separately one track at a time.
Shame about the Presonus - I'd probably have bought that.

But thanks for your help. You've clarified a few things for me.

All the best John

John, take a look at the Behringer Xenyx QX1202 USB mixer. That would be ideal for you. Plenty of inputs, built in high quality effects and lots of control over your recording.

Thanks Saul,

Very helpful.
I've had a quick read of the spec and I can't see any mention of a midi input.
Wouldn't I need this for my Motif 8 ? Or am I missing the point somewhere ?

All the best, John

Your Motif 8 can connect to your computer via USB for the midi connection so for that part it would not need midi ports on the mixer. Use the mixer for the Motif audio connections.

Thanks Saul.
You've given me plenty to think about.
The January Sales will be getting some action.

All the best John.
