A Martin Guitar for $149 Surely Not? and you would of course be right!

Unread post by Saul » Sat Feb 03, 2018 4:33 pm

Apparently some enterprising souls in Singapore came up with a novel plan to advertise a limited number of "genuine" Martin guitars for just $149 each and of course some people fell for it.

The guitars on offer allegedly retailed at between $825 and $1,725 each so buying one would see you with a 90% discount.

There were two websites involved in this wonderful deal. One website was saying it had a total of 94 Martin Guitars that it was able to sell at cost price because the truck carrying them was involved in an accident but the guitars were undamaged. Which begs the question, if the guitars were "undamaged" by the accident what on earth warrants a discount of 90%?

The other site claimed that it had 100 guitars that were prohibited by Singapore Customs from being exported after failing to conform to export regulations and that these were later released to be sold at "cost price" after discussions between customs officers and the manufacturers. I wasn't aware genuine Martin guitars were made in Singapore so WHY would they be "exporting" them?

Of course the whole thing was a very obvious scam but at least 9 people fell for it.

Singapore Customs posted on their facebook page :

Now there are fake Martin guitars coming out of China and it "could" be that the people who ordered these supposedly "genuine" guitars will receive one of the fakes...which would not be so bad but even the fakes sell for more than this so, highly unlikely.

Well, if they're any good, the price is fair, but the branding is fake and the story about undamaged guitars after a truck accident really stinks.

That sort of marketing raises my suspicion to max. no deal.

I'm just constantly amazed at why people think they will be able to buy a genuine high end Martin, Taylor etc for 10% of normal retail price. It makes no sense no matter what way you look at it. The cheapest fakes will set you back at least $250 so how in any scenario would the genuine item cost just $149?

Most Chinese fakes these days won't carry the logo of the big name brand unless you specifically ask for it to be included. Since the name is the reason people often buy fakes I think their money would be better spent on an official budget version of the original. All the big brands have cheaper alternatives now.
