Indulge my paranoia! Is my Yamaha LL11 fake?

Unread post by MaxDread » Fri Dec 28, 2012 7:54 pm

Hi all

I bought a used Yamaha LL11 recently and just want to check it is legit.

If I were to take and post photos would anyone be able to tell? Any other ways of checking?

Many thanks

Max

(PS - if photos are needed I'll take them in the morning as they'll come out better in natural light).

Hmm, Thats strange, Max.
I'm not that guitar-savvy, but that looks like quite some serious Pitting of the Rosewood.

Have you noticed that it seems to be between the strings rather than under them? I can't visualise how it occurred . . . .

Some of the frets look well worn. I think, too deeply to be corrected by filing.

I would guess re-fretting is indicated, if the guitar pleases you generally in other ways, such that the expense could be justified.

In a perfect world I would guess the fretboard could be re-done with new rosewood and new frets - but at what cost? The original price of the guitar would have to justify that IMO.

I think a guitar tech. need to eyeball it and give you a more-informed set of options.

Re: the photos - if you need to show the damage better, then try to light that neck area for "texture"
i.e. Bring a light with a bare filament bulb (not Pearl) to the side of the fingerboard and slightly above it - to shine ACROSS the damaged area. (A small desk lamp with a Quartz-Halogen bulb would be ideal) That should accentuate the size and the shape of the "pits".

Hope that helps (I used to be a scientific+technical photographer in a former life)
