Waxing My Guitar !

Unread post by Soof » Mon Mar 27, 2017 4:46 am

Just got done applying wax to my Yamaha 500 APX-3 and discovered something very interesting.

The tone of the guitar is a bit more mellow, also losing some of it's, I guess you could say, Tinniest. (is that a proper description of the sound at the high end?)

[ I understand what you're saying , Russ - I would suggest "Tinniness" as a proper description :D <parametric>]

I had a bunch of micro scratches one the front, but mostly on the back, so I approached the task of eliminating them the same way I do with micro scratches on my car. Confession: I'm a bit of a detailing nut!

So this is what I used:

1. PS21 car wax.
2. Maguiar's Scratch X.
3. Martins spray cleaner.
4. Microsoft towel.

What I did:
Rubbed an applicator pad with a touch of wax and added a small drop of Scratch X (A very gentle scratch remover) and sprayed just a mist of Martins cleaner on about a third of the back. Rubbed gently, back and forth, and circular. This took a couple of tries.
Finished the back then did the front and then the sides.

Result: Wow ! Looks like the day I received it. Gorgeous.
But the side result was that the guitar played a bit deeper and more mellow. A sound which I was searching for.
I've also been using a new pick (Snark .68) and that also added to some smoothness and depth.

So that's my little project. I'm not sure I would do this with a $5k Martin or Taylor, but on this Yamaha it sure worked.

Any thoughts?

Hi Russ.

As long as you don't use a type of wax that's too abrasive, it will work fine.

I used to occasionally spray wax furniture polish inside my cheap acoustics during a string change which would bulk up the dry wood mass (laminates seem to get much dryer than solids) a bit and give the things some warm mids and a little more low end for a few months, as well as a bit more sustain. The effect wears off fairly soon though.

I think I would be very cautious using wax, scratch remover, even polish, on Yamaha acoustics (and electrics).

Yamaha is offering guitars with a great consistent quality, but if you could name one little drawback it could be some problems with finishes in the past.

I assume you all know the heavy milky clouding some Yamaha guitars suffer from. I have a APX20 that suffers extremely from that. I've have a 70'ies SF's that had a very soft finish. My FG500 doesn't stand even the less abrasive polishes like from Dunlop or Martin. It's impossible to get that guitar shiny again, is just gets more sticky. I also had L5A with a dull very sticky top (and fantsatic hard and shiny back and sides). And finally, some of my acoustics, even the ones that should be poly finished, are very sensitive for the plasticiser coming out of some guitar stands.

So guys: take care when applying wax or polish.

I only ever use a microfibre cloth on my guitars and FastFret for the strings and fretboard...not on guitars with a maple fretboard by the way, you definitely don't want to let lemon oil anywhere near those!
