Yamaha FG441-S - Advice Please

Unread post by enty01 » Tue Aug 29, 2017 9:50 pm

Hi

I'm new to the forum - new to guitars - new to Yamaha

I'm also getting on in years, but thought I might try to learn guitar

I wanted a decent acoustic guitar, but not at a premium price = I have just bought a Yamaha FG441-S from a lady who bought it in the 1990's. She said it had never been used. Sure enough, I collected it from her today & it was in the original box with all the wrapping & tags, and in total 'as new' mint condition - it has been kept in the box, in a spare bedroom since she bought it.

I didn't have the cheek to ask how much she paid for it - I have paid £140 UK sterling & was wondering if I have had a good deal? It's a lovely looking guitar!

On another note - the protective film was still on the fingerboard & I have removed it - but the residue from the glue just won't come off = any ideas?

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum and the String Section. :D

Looking at online prices: https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=yamaha%20fg441s it looks like you got a fair deal.

Priceguide: https://reverb.com/price-guide/guide/15 ... 96-natural

At least, the guitar didn't cost an arm and a leg, so if it's a good player, and you're happy with it, the price is fine.

You're welcome to upload pictures if you want us to take a closer look.

Best Regards
Peter

Welcome to the forums :)

I'm not sure the FG441-S was an expensive guitar when it was released although it has a solid spruce top so that is definitely a plus. If it has been packed away since it was bought then the sound will improve further with regular playing. All in all it's a nice looking guitar and I would say you got a good deal on it. Definitely put up some pics when you can :)

Depending on how dry the glue residue is ........

You can start wiping most of it off with a dry disposable rag, (elbow grease required)
then give the fretboard some lemon oil, and polish it back to new.

You may need to repeat the process if the first cleaning didn't do the job.

 DON'T use soap, water or solvents.

I have never purchased a guitar with protective film on the fingerboard. Wasn't aware they did that.

DEFINITELY don't use solvents. It's tempting but you are very, very likely going to destroy the fingerboard. Lemon oil is as strong as you go with these things. But as Peter said, dry rag and elbow grease first. Take your time. Don't rush it. You'll get there :)

Thanks for all the replies/advice.

Solved the fingerboard issue by carefully using a hairdryer to completely remove the original fingerboard - you can no longer tell it was even there

Have ordered a new Tortoise shell FG Yamaha fingerboard on eBay - from USA & for a very reasonable price (original one was Black)

I'm told it's possible to identify when produced by serial number - I'm struggling to do that = 51219418

Some images as requested.

Thanks again!

I couldn't see from the label where your FG was built but given it was probably built in the the 90's my guess from your serial number is:

Your FG441-S was built on the 19th Dec 1995.

Many thanks Saul- I read somewhere that they were built between 93 & 98 - so that fits in perfectly; new finger guard now back in place

fingerboard , finger guard .........

You lost me there for a while, do you mean the PICKGUARD (scratch plate) ?

If that's the one, this makes more sense with protrctive plastic film on a new guitar. :)

 The fingerboard/fretboard is the front of the guitar neck, holding the metal frets.
