Yamaha SY-55 step up transformer power conversion

Unread post by msc1958 » Sat Aug 20, 2016 2:12 pm

Hello Forum Members,

I live in the USA and recently purchased an SY-55 that has the European plug that requires 220 volts 50 hz . My question is can the power transformer be resolderred to the power supply board in series to bring the 220 volt down to 120 and run on USA power? Will the USA 60 hz cycle frequency cause any problems since it is not 50 hz? Can someone recommend an already manufactured step up transformer in the event the parallel to series needs to be undone? Any other ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance. Mark :?

Hi Mark,

The SY55 ships with three variations of the transformer: One for Japan, One for USA / Canada, and one for everywhere else. The service manual shows no provision for changing the tapping on the primary.

Brian,

Thanks for the quick reply. The plug end has two skinny looking cylinder type metal protrusions. Each looks like the size of a 1 inch Popsicle stick - definitely not USA or Japan. I would suspect that I will wind up purchasing a step up transformer. Just a matter of which one is recommended by the forum. Thanks again! Ttyl

Update: back panel info 220-240V 15w 50-60Hz ~
Since the frequency is not a problem. I am thinking about using a GoldSource ST-100 step up/stepdown transformer. Other users from other sites have shared that they are an affordable option and get the job done. The 100 watt rating is more than ideal for a 15 watt synth.
