Fusion 8HD - low volume and buzz on left channel

Unread post by dizM0nkey » Fri Aug 31, 2018 10:50 pm

Hello!

New to this forum but hoping to get more involved as I am just dusting off my Alesis Fusion 8HD after several years of it just kind of sitting there. I powered it up the other day and noticed I'm getting much lower audio volume and sever line noise/buzz out of the left channel.

I tried it with just the headphones and the same is true when headphones or 1/4" jack, so I'm pretty certain this is an internal issue. It was never gigged so I'm not sure what the issue might be.

Has anyone else experienced this and know of a solution?

I did a sample recording of the issue here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2zmojkyxw2iww ... z.mp3?dl=0
(I increased the volume toward the end of the recording so the buzz/noise was more easily heard coming from the left channel)

Hi dizM0nkey, welcome to the forums.

I don't own a Fusion now unfortunately although I have had a couple in the past. Never any issues with mine though. All or most of the problems seem to be with the 8HD for some reason.

If it were just a noise you were getting I would investigate a mains earthing issue but as the volume level is also affected I doubt that is what it is. Perhaps an op amp is on it's way out? or just a bad connection. Have you opened it up yet?

Try "exercising" the main out sockets and the Headphone Socket, with a plug . . . . . (Fusion switched OFF)

Plug IN/UNplug - about six times . . . .

With long periods of non use, the contact surfaces can get dusty/tarnished . . . . .

The same may be true of the Volume Pot.

If you're opening the 8HD, some switch cleaner squirted in to the pot's case (through one of the leg-holes) -

and a workout with the knob - might help . . .

Thank you Saul & parametric,

Thank you for the warm welcome! My goodness, I believe the "exercising" of the main sockets and headphone socket actually worked! I'm not getting any nasty buzz anymore. I had no idea this was a thing. Thanks for the guidance, suggestions, and solution!

Now I DO need to pop it open and get the upgraded RAM module I ordered in there, so I might pick up that switch cleaner and compressed air to make sure it's all looking good. @parametric, I am looking to install an SSD in there, as well, and will be following your guide: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=7520

Thanks, again!

That's GREAT!

It's often the simple approach that "does it" (Y)

BTW - this is the switch cleaner . . . . (there are others) . . .

Good luck with the SSD upgrade . . . remember it must be a PATA SSD

So good to hear you have sorted the noise issue with that great tip there from Chris. This is an issue I also was not aware of so we both learned something new :)

A good way to 'clean' those jacks/plugs is to apply a small amount of switch cleaner onto the plug and then plug/unplug it several times to 'rub' off potential 'goo' or residue...
