Introduction and SG questions

Unread post by Cuthbert » Sun Feb 04, 2018 10:51 am

Hello everyone, I just registered because I have a question regarding two models in particular: the SG1000 and the 3000.

The shop close to where I live has two of these guitars, reissues from the early 2000s: a sunburst 1000 and a gold 2000. They have been sitting in the shop for years and I can get a good price for them. I played extensively and while the 3000 is a sort of Ferrari the sound of the 1000 is more open, more "rock" to say.

I came to the conclusion that the pickups are different, despite of the info I found online. I.would be inclined to get the 3000 due to its superior construction, but I would like to understand if it's possible to buy separately the Alnico Vs of the 1000/2000... I wrote to Yamaha but nobody answered me so far.

Thank you for your attention, Cuth.

Hi Cuth, welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

I have 3 SG's : SG-35 (1974) , SG-50 (1974) and SG-3000s from 1984.

The SG-3000 came with coil split Spinex pickups from the factory, giving a wonderful clear sound.

You'll find our SG forum here: viewforum.php?f=138

Best Regards
Peter

Thank you, I am aware of the Spinex PU but this 3000 is a 2009 reissue, not an original from the 80s, my understanding was that the hardware should be the same as the 1000 and 2000, am I mistaken?

My knowledge of the reissue SG's is on the weak side, hopefully another member with solid facts will jump in.

NOS pickups for SG-1000/2000 can be purchased here: http://www.music-trade.co.jp/JVsparepartsII.html
$110 each for bridge & Neck pickups.

If you are going to swap pickups on a re-issue SG-3000, I would be looking for a set of Spinex which I would characterize as high output and as Peter says they are clear, especially when you crank the gain up.
They will be harder to find, so the NOS SG's may be an easier solution.
