Hello and welcome. Miks is the man for the DX7 around here, and hopefully he will be along soon.

Well - you can't run an extension board (like a Supermax/Grey Matter E! or a Jahn SPX) beside a 'genuine' DX7 ROM. The reason is that every extension has (and needs) its own firmware eprom to operate. In addition there are several 'hardware-mods' to do like cutting traces and soldering wires. If these mods are done a 'genuine' firmware isn't able to work anymore. 8O So you have to decide what to do: fit your synth with such an extension card or use the latest firmware / an alternative firmware like the Special Edition ROM (SER7) which also came from Yamaha (afaik) - then NO hardware mod is necessary.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Miks

Hi Djeeker. Happy New year to you and welcome to yamahamusicians.com :)

Miks has already filled you in on the situation with the DX7 regarding mods etc but I noticed you had a ROLI Seaboard in your gear list? Which model is it and what do you think of it? I have played one a couple of times and whilst it is an incredibly interesting bit of kit it does take some modifying of playing style to get the best from it. Did you find that you needed to change the way you play?

Hi and thanks for the quick replies and information!

I started playing keyboards just a couple of years ago and I am all but a good player so I can only share my limited experience.
I have the seaboard rise 49 keys and love it. I use it mostly to imitate electric guitars and for orchestral sounds like on film scores type blade runner or gladiator..I like to listen to vidéoclips and try to replay from listening, finding some chords on the internet and building up the song. I would love to sing the lyrics as well but my wife and kids just kill me when I start singing.. I don’t know why ;)

I see the seaboard as very different to play as a piano. Except the layout of the keys all is different. I often use the piano/ keyboard for chords and play the solo part on the right hand on the seaboard

There are a few interesting tutorials on the ROLI website to check out. Obviously there are some expert players who can do magical performances on it but not me and it is not easy to get there I believe even if you are an experienced piano player but knowing the piano definitely will give a huge theoretical head start.

I will install the Supermax. Does it solve the midi channel issues of the DX7?

Happy 2019 to all the members !!!

Hi,
Just welded the new condensator and plugged in the supermax card
All working well but I understand banks 1 and 2 are fixed with Supermax sounds (some rather rich sounds) the other 14 are available to load stuff into.
I tried to load the original DX7 sounds from the cartridge but all is modified according to the supermax setting and i can’t figure out how to load the 32 sounds without having to tweak them all over again?

I am also wondering if I can use the midi sysex to load sounds in the supermax?

Greetings
Jc

Thanks for the info on the lcd..

Going back to supermax, I managed to load the original DX7 sounds we like so much in banks 3 and 4 but they don’t quite sound like original anymore. Even when playing from the cartridge it seems the unit drags some of the supermax settings with it?

Tried to do a voice init and function init before loading the bank but even those 2 inits don’t cut the chase .

Anybody experienced with supermax faced the same issue?

:confusion-confused:

Found the Solution.
The supermax settings remain active when uploading the original sounds in the bank from the cartridges
Either select One sound and set all supermax levels at 0, or select sound New York in bank 2,4 or other and import the card data
After un protecting the internal memory
