Having issue with bought SY77

Yamaha SY77 is a 16 voice multitimbral music workstation first produced by Yamaha Corporation in 1989. The SY77 is a synthesizer whose architecture combines AFM (Advanced Frequency Modulation) synthesis, AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) for ROM-borne sample-based synthesis, and the combination of these two methods christened Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM).

Having issue with bought SY77

Unread post by Studiostriver » Tue Feb 12, 2019 1:36 pm

Hi. I recently purchased SY77,unfortunatelly it has ton of problems.

I tried to rest factory patches,it didnt work with this method.

Reset:

1) Turn the power on.

2) While pressing the [VOICE] button, press and hold the [BANK D] button, then the [8] button. The SY77 will run the INITIAL TEST routine and display the Test Program Menu.

3) Press the [COPY] button. The SY77 will execute Test 48 'Factory Settings', automatically exit the test mode, and then return to play mode.

The other very strange issue I having is when I put sustain and volume they react strange.

Sustain pedal leave note sustained after I press them, and they wont go,but it work reversed after that. I must hold sustain pedal in order to get dry tone and release for sustain note.
Other is volume,it react to changes but do not want to change volume,it snaps it quickly.

And the last one would be, for strange reason after I do not play it it stops reacting, and I have to restart synth and then it all works good.

I need to know are these things reparable or toy suggest me to return it?
Kind regards,
Dado.

Might have to do with the backup battery. Normally if the backup battery is weak or bad, the screen should display that, but not always. What are you using for a sustain pedal? different sustain pedals will have different polarities, I have one that has a switch in it to reverse this polarity, although yours seems like a malfunction. I would use a good electronics cleaner in the sustain jack to see if dirt is contaminating the connection, and if then works consistently but reversed, you need a compatible sustain pedal. I don't remember but the SY77 may have a setting in the menu for switching the sustain pedal polarity, I'd have to look at my manual to check this. This is a rather complex keyboard to take apart even to replace the battery if that is the problem but i have done it, not impossible. problems might be from the sy77 being stored in a damp or dirty environment. I'd run the factory reset again. Leave the SY on for a day or 2 to see if it stabilizes. If it still malfunctions and you don't want to risk taking the bottom cover off to inspect how dirty or corroded it might be inside-which could cause alot of trouble, then I would consider returning it. These are one of the more well-made keyboards I've owned, usually can take a lot of abuse but electronics/computers can fail. sometimes even a tiny fault can cause operating problems.

Hi. Thanks for reply.

I have no problem with dispay, also it not send me notion that I need to change battery, but I will need to change since I`m not sure that anyone actually changed original one till this day.

So there is no option to change polarity on the synth?I`ll have to find it.
I think systain pedal is completely funcional and volume pedal as well, actually never had problem with it on my Novation Midi keyboard for years.

The synth actually looks pretty well, but as you said without someone checking it we do nto knwo how it looks inside.I`ll ahve to send to for repair I guess.

I also need to replace some pushbuttons. Gonna order them from ebay i guess.

After pllaying whole day I got addicted to it, very nice sounds. I hope switch polarity gonna solve all my problems, and sy menager gonna open new world of possibilities.

I`m amazed with keys ,such a quallity, pretty great for playing.

Little update.

After I spent some time with SY77 in my room I manage to reset factory presets.
I came to realisation I was holding wrong 8 number, once I pressed 8 on preset patches bank it started. So that was solved.

I will tomorrow check it with stereo cables, this day I used only mono.
After that stopped having previous problem with presets making no sound after I left it for a long time without playing.

Currently the only problem I having is that I cant heard drum patches 1 or 2. For some strange reason they make no sound whatever I do.
Also I still cant locate were to change polarity of sustain and volume pedals. I guess its in controllers option but my enter pushbutton unfortunatelly do not work. I`ll have to wait till new pushbutton arrive and to send it to keyboard electrician, friend of mine.

Since I`m new to SY77.If you guys have any suggestion I`m willing to try, also if there is anything that is selling currently for this synth to upgrade it please let me know.

There are always a few MCD64 RAM cards on eBay that can be used to store more programs, multis and all files in addition to the floppy drive save and load functions. there are a huge number of posts here about all the aspects of the SY77. I have also tried 1-2 of the cards that add additional samples to the SY77-the drum cards mainly, which usually are available 2 to a set-one card has the samples, the other has programs that use those samples. The sample card is the important one since it adds samples you can use to program your own sounds even if you don't get the 2nd card which only contains the data needed to create new sounds with the samples and is not really necessary if you know how to work with creating sounds yourself. There are also several posts here about a user who has created 2 very interesting upgrade cards for the SY77/99 series. A little pricey but adds alot of memory and the ability to load samples from any other source, not just Yamaha samples.

Good advice there from <jokeyman>

The add-ons he is referring to are from our member <shadowmask>

His products are here: https://www.sector101.co.uk

Of particular interest in the DataBlade32: https://www.sector101.co.uk/datablade.html

The price may seem high, but remember that ORIGINAL MCD64 cards typically sell for ~£50 on ebay . . . .

The DataBlade is equivalent to 32 x MCD64 Cards . . . . PLUS - being NEW, there are no worries about old

capacitors/components. giving up on you . . .

I had Brian's initial design (the Sweet16) which was = to 16 x MCD64 cards . . . . Worked flawlessly with my Sy85 . . .

I later sold it on to another member in here . . . .

Thanks Parametric-I was too lazy to look up the post. Was probably right in front of me in the menu of posts. Thanks for reminding us, I will check it again. Last I looked one or the other was temporarily out of stock

No Problem . . . .

Brian's products are EXCELLENT.

I have 2 x SYEMB06 in my Sy85, and 2 x E3s in my Fusion 6HD . . . .

so, for the price of TWO (old) MCD64s - you can have 32 x MCD64s . . . .

No-Brainer . . . . springs to mind?

Thank you guys for all suggestions guys so far.
Well I got SY77 believe it or not for 70 euros, so this upgrades are indeed bit expensive. But I`ll start sparing some bucks, hopefully during the year get one DataBlade32.
WaveBlade 8MB Waveform Card is looking awesome too but I do not understand how it all works, and do I have to have those additional waveform cards to actyally have something in it?
Do I ge some new waveforms or only blank card expansion where I can easier edit everything via arduino based connection that has usb?

Curently I`m kind a sad this synths has very small amount of patches.
I`ll probbaly first spend time first buck on SY menaged from FM Alive and using coverted patches to expand sounds a bit, especialy some older FM.

I do not know is buying usb emulator is good idea?

A little tricky with the SYs but has been done. Have to be very careful which model of usb emulator you buy-not all are equal to the task. Look at the posts here. I didn't bother-my floppy drive stayed in good shape, usually only the belt breaks or gets loose and is easily replaced-again procedure posted here on this forum. You can also connect the sy77 to the computer with a usb midi din adapter-get a good one, not the cheap Chinese cables posted everywhere-these more often than not either cause transfer problems or don't work at all (I know, I've tried a few, had alot of problems and now use a Midisport 2x2 usb/midi din box). if you do that, you can transfer dozens of files in .syx (sysex) format directly into the SY77 with any decent software program designed for this-there are many freeware programs for this, just Google sysex software or freeware. I use Midiox for sysex and other functions, is freeware for full program, if I don't want to deal with floppies of which I have a few dozen over the years. And you can find SY77 soundfiles in .syx format if you Google that, last I looked there was an amazing database of sounds, just have to search. Others here can probably direct you to exact links to get these. This is an amazing instrument-I have played over 20 different keyboards over the years, and this is one of the few classic ones I've kept as it has sounds nothing else can create, except of course the newest Yamahas-for a little more money if you want an MOX or an EX7 or 5 or similar.

Thanks for replay. I actually have solid soundcard with good Midi quallity, RME UCX,but I`ll have to buy some good midi cables since I used one for my Roland XV5080.
Good to know there are tons of good syx patches for SY77,cant wait to try them.
To me its kind a cool that you can use usb emulator once you find patches you like the most, you can have them well sorted on usb for instant access for fast jamming or making songs without anything else except librarien/editor.

EX7/5 as far as I know do not have FM synthesis which si the reason I choose to have SY77 over it personally.SY99 is impossible to find here in my country, very rare units.

One more update,I solved problem of not hearing drum 1/2 patches.
When I put stereo cables drums were actually on second channel. So it appears that SY77 OS works right, and I only having problem with push buttons.
Waiting them to come from ebay delivery.

Sparing bucks for sy menager, and probably blade data card, and thinking about usb emulator.

Thanks guys for your replies, this will keep me going.

Kind regards,
Dado.
