New Screen Replacement Option

Yamaha SY77 is a 16 voice multitimbral music workstation first produced by Yamaha Corporation in 1989. The SY77 is a synthesizer whose architecture combines AFM (Advanced Frequency Modulation) synthesis, AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) for ROM-borne sample-based synthesis, and the combination of these two methods christened Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM).

New Screen Replacement Option

Unread post by SYmon » Sat Feb 28, 2015 1:11 am

Hi Derek, I followed your installation guide for the cool blue display and took a chance on a display from the vendor listed below. It worked great! Just thought I would share since I don't think I have seen anyone referencing displays from that website before. They run about $23 and it took about a week to arrive from China. I did have to switch out the contrast resistor for a higher value, thanks to a guide by someone who replaced a TG77 screen I was able to get it working just right.

Thanks for your extremely helpful pdf, someone like myself would have never attempted such an upgrade without it.

They also have two other color options that I didn't try, but I don't see why they wouldn't also work.

Hi, SYmon

I'm glad that you found the guide useful and thanks for sharing the info. That's quite a cheap source of displays that you have found. :)

I'll make this post "sticky" to make it easy to find.

Fogot to mention I used a 5.8k 1/8w resistor at R158 on the DM-1 circuit board with great results. Thanks to defenestration for the link to Bruno's photo story and passing along the tip.

That's a nice find. With those prices, buy one of each and try out :D (and nice they don't have the 'two-colored' edge, which is what kept me
away from the "Cool-Blue"-mod ;)

Allthough I did a EL-panel/inverter-change, I have to try the Black on White. I think it'll look Cool on the SY77 8)

Hi could you please post a link to that guide as I might chose this display for my TG 77?
Is the resistor you swapped out mentioned in that guide? If not could you please tell us which one and what you replaced it with?
Many thanks in advance.

Perhaps this may be the answer to your question? Or have I missed something...?

Does anyone know for sure what the seller of the display means when he says:
Pin Header(Soldered as default)
Does that mean by default the pin header is not soldered on, but for 33 cents I can get it with the pin header soldered on?
Should I buy it with this option or without it for the TG 77? :?

I recently ordered two of their black on white displays. I will let you know how that goes. I was a bit worried today after reading in another replacement guide that the max recommended depth of the display is 7mm to fit in the SY77 and these are 12.6 mm. But, it seems it worked well for you, so that's good hope for me :-) I ordered two so I can do my Wavestation A/D as well.

I got my display today, $30 including shipping + €5 VAT charge by the customs office, not bad for a replacement TG77 display that looks very well made.

Now I need to figure out how to mount it...

I installed one of the two I ordered that were black on white. My Wavestation was totally burned out, so here is a pic of that one redone :-) Pic is attached...

Hi SYmon -

The links you posted are no longer working. Are the links entered incorrectly, or do you suspect those screens are not available any more.

Also - could you provide web pointers to both the SY77 and the TG77 guides you used on your installation.

I've read some horror stories of people not being able to fit new display units physically into thier instrument. Did you encounter any issues like that?

Thanks,
Kevin.
