Peculiar SY99 Battery Issue

The Yamaha SY99 is a synthesiser combining frequency modulation synthesis (branded as Advanced FM) and sample-based synthesis (branded as Advanced Wave Memory 2) and the direct successor to Yamaha's SY77/TG77

Peculiar SY99 Battery Issue

Unread post by DrSynth » Mon Feb 18, 2019 7:04 pm

This weekend I got the common 'WARNING - change INT wave battery" message on one of my SY99's and duly replaced the battery (easy as I installed battery holders a few years back), powered back up & got the same message again. ?!?

Tested the new battery - all good at 3.15V. Made sure it was in the holder correctly, tried it again. Same message.

Ran Test mode, the RAM battery test came back "4.6V high -- NG" - never seen that before, I've only seen low voltage messages like "1.8V low - NG"

So I swapped out the DM2 board with other DM2 boards from two SY99's that work 100% without the battery error message - they now give the same error message in this particular SY99. Putting it's board into either of the other two SY's, and then it functions 100% without the battery error message. So, all DM2 boards give the battery error message in this particular SY99

Also tried swapping out the DM1 board - no change, still get the same "4.6V high" battery error message,

Last thing just to be complete -- when I put 5 known good sample RAM expansion boards, the error message then shows the batteries on all 5 of them are "bad" along with the internal as well

Based on the board swapping and actual retention of the sample RAM after shutdown and unplugging the SY, it appears the voltage is going through correctly to maintain the RAM, but however the voltage signal is reported to the Firmware OS is bad - so I'm suspecting a cabling issue, something on CN209 as best as I can read and understand the schematics.

Peculiar, and new to me... Any thoughts?

A strange one. On what board does the battery voltage get measured?

Afaik the batteries voltages are measured on pcb DM1. If you take a look to the schematic there's IC130 (Multiplexer 74HC4052) which 'collects' those values: IBT1 (Internal Battery 1) leads to Pin15 (X2), IBT2 (Internal Battery 2) leads to Pin11 (X3), CBT (Card Battery) leads to Pin14 (X1). The output (Pin13 (X)) leads to Pin73 (AN7) of the main CPU H8/532 which also toggles that 'battery lines' via the Pins 75/76 (P90/P91) leading to Pin9 & 10 (A&B) of the multiplexer IC130...

Miks - you da MAN!

Intially I figured it had to be cabling as (thought) I had swapped to a second DM1 board, when in fact going back after reading your post I realized and had removed then reinstalled the original DM1 board, not the swap (which when I did it correctly, the message went away)

So, I removed the CPU form the 'bad' DM1 board, re-straightened all the CPU contacts - especially pins 73-76, re-seated it, put the original board back in the SY, and all is good!

Those dang, pesky 30 year old parts!
