Yahoo Groups shutting down - any SY99/SY-77 group members here?

Yahoo Groups shutting down - any SY99/SY-77 group members here?

Unread post by JK1974 » Thu Oct 31, 2019 9:44 am

Hi,

you might have missed it, that´s why I kind of re-post it here: At viewtopic.php?f=73&t=14371, Mighty Motif Max is about to download the content of Yahoo Groups because it was announced that the message archive and the files will be deleted by Yahoo on 12/14.

Might Motif Max has already downloaded a lot, but the groups "sy99" and "sy-77" are still missing. Therefore, as a SY99 owner who never used the Yahoo Groups before, I would be interested in getting an archive of the groups "sy99" and "sy-77" - but as may other groups, they are restricted. My membership request has not been answered for days and might never be - user sockmonkey mentioned that he did not get a reply for at least one year on his request for the "SY99" group.

Is there anyone out there who has a membership on those groups and might help out Mighty Motif Max (or me)?

With kind regards
Joerg

I am on sy-77 (but not sy99 regrettably, tried for a while), and would be happy to help.

How is everyone downloading this data? And what are you doing with it, because...

Thanks!

Up to now, Miks just downloaded the files from those groups manually - since there are even some PD disks missing, I had some hope that more could be find that is not yet available somewhere else. But in fact, it might we worth also downloading the knowledge stored in the messages.

The "problem" is: Mighty Motif Max has already downloaded quite a lot of other groups with his 30-days-trial of PG Offline.
On the other hand, I refuse to install this trial just for downloading those two groups (where I still don´t have personal access to BTW) and currently prefer to go with the free Python script from https://github.com/IgnoredAmbience/yahoo-group-archiver, even though it still has some issues, but development is very active. But getting this to run, requires Python installed on your PC.
So, both solutions are not that perfect.
I sent PMs to Mighty Motif Max to see if his records stored in an SQlite DB has everything needed and/or if it can somehow be mixed with the JSONs that the Yahoo Group Archiver generates - I don´t want to "compete" with him by using another output format but try to find a common solution instead that is future-proof and also not limited by commercial restraints.

Currently, for getting the Yahoo Group Archiver script to run, I have the Anaconda-Toolkit installed, not the "simple" Python from www.python.org, but it should work in the same way:
1. Install the Python 3.x package from https://www.anaconda.com/distribution/#download-section (or maybe www.python.org)
2. Download the script from https://github.com/IgnoredAmbience/yahoo-group-archiver by clicking on the "Clone or download" button and extract the Zip (or use "git clone https://github.com/IgnoredAmbience/yaho ... chiver.git" in case you have the tool "Git" installed).
3. Open the "Anaconda Prompt". Use the drive letters (like "d:") and "cd" commands to change the drive and go into the directory where the Yahoo Groups Archiver is located.
4. Use the following command to install needed Python libraries automatically: "pip install -r requirements.txt"
5. Finally, call the tool with 'python yahoo.py -ct "<T_cookie>" -cy "<Y_cookie>" "<groupid>"'. The site https://github.com/IgnoredAmbience/yahoo-group-archiver describes how to get the two cookies from Chrome or Firefox. The "groupid" is of course something like "SY99" or "sy-77".

Thanks, that seems to be working fine on MacOS, as well. I only have access to sy-77

I certainly don't want to "compete" with anyone, it just seems crazy for 100 people to perform the same download if the materials can be posted to some good-for-now location/torrent server/something to avoid the compartmentalization of data and duplication of effort.

For one week, here's the sy-77 group (messages and files) on WeTransfer: https://we.tl/t-OxDc7POKoV

If anyone here has a more permanent way of hosting this (preferably in relation to other synth-related materials), please do. If not, I might be able to host it somewhere.
