Yamaha SY77 dressed as SY99?

Unread post by shadowmask » Thu Jun 14, 2018 6:21 pm

I see this on eBay but somethings are not right about it.

There is no rear cover for the SYEMB05s, the jacks and MIDI ports are in the wrong place, and the SY99 text above the disk drive is missing.
The rear panel photo has been cleverly cropped so you cannot see what model it is after the "YAMAHA" text.

Hi,

You're right, this is very strange. But it has more than 61 keys, and the SC.RezWhap sound (P2 A04) seems to be at the right place. Could this be a very early model without slots for memory extensions ?

A thread on GS mentioned there were a number of very early SY99 prototypes (the guy posting had one at one time) and suspected this could be one of those. Stuff like that does surface occasionally; I happen to have one of the 6 Polymoog prototypes here in the shop (not mine).

There is something odd about it, as well as what Brian mentions above, the LCD display (backlight is shot by the way!) does not show the SY99 specific Mstr (Master) mode option over the F6 key.

It is also a crazy price, well above market average. I always say that value is in the eyes of the beholder :) but I would not pay this price for this one.

It's definitely a 1990 prototype like this SY99 with no sample utility menu
... apparently every SY99 with a serial less than 1001 where prototypes.

That's a really interesting article, and probably clears the mystery up. I doubt the seller knows about it, otherwise it would be mentioned - unless he does know about it and wants to keep quiet....

I'm trying to figure out if the fact that it is an early prototype makes it worth more or less than a production unit. On the one hand it is rarer than a production unit, on the other hand it is lacking features. I still would not pay the asking price for it, as, at the least, it needs a new display.

Several Facebook group users have advised him that it is an early one. The price has been reduced to £500 - still too much really.

I think the fact that it is a prototype makes it "interesting" but the lack of features compared to the retail version makes it worth less. Maybe he is hoping for a collector come along and buy it for the rarity aspect but for anyone looking for a usable SY99 I would say give it a miss.

And I agree with you Brian. Even £500 is too much.
