End Caps/ end cheeks

Unread post by rtype909 » Wed Jun 06, 2012 12:54 pm

Has anyone tried replacing the end cheeks? The left-hand side looks the most complicated.
Mine have cracked in transit.

hi rtype909,
Welcome to the Forums! I have not replaced any of mine, but it should not be overly complicated. Yamaha parts/support may be able to offer you some info and let you know if they are still available. If they are not, then you will most likely have to find some on an SY99 being sold for parts.

if you cant get them

then im thinking of adding wooden end cheaks to mine to give it a retro look

i already make the for the asr10 esq1 korg dss1

and looking at the sy99 i might be doing a design for that

so i might have a spare set of plastics

Hi! I have replaced mine. Piece of cake. Don't worry! Just open the synth and it's a matter of removing few screws.

Do you have pics? I think left hand side looks tricky

No, I don't have any pics. Yesterday I had to open it again to replace the volume slider pots and I can assure you there's no need to worry. Easy-peasy. ;)

I don't know if there are different SY99's around, but on mine , the left side end cheek also incorporates the 3 mod wheels and the floppy drive. I would have to cut the plastic (difficult to do neatly) or be very very clever with some intricate wood carving.

It might look a bit silly if I only do the right hand side...

No, there are no different revisions of the case for the SY99 or any of these synths.

What are you thinking of doing? Did I miss a previous post where you mentioned a problem with your SY99, or do you just fancy a change?

Well actually, the rear of the right side end cheek is cracked and missing a piece, (the left has a tiny chip out of it also) so it crossed my mind that I might make some out of wood, until I looked closer at it.

This thread seems to suggest it would me a simple matter, unless I've misunderstood ! It won't be simple to me anyway.

I should wait until I find someone selling scrap bits from a '99 and see if I can replace the right side, but it's not a priority really.

Would be nice to pimp it up though !

Still not started with this but i would like to know of any tips, one might have, as to cutting the left-hand cheek which incorporates the wheels and floppy drive. Right-hand cheek seems straightforward; remove/replace.

Did you consider making a cardboard template of the right and left cheeks outlines and transferring these to wood rectangular boards. Then router out the center section of the boards so they "cap" the cheeks of the sy77/99? This would would be easier and keep whatever plastic that exists on the cheeks and encapsulate them. I would choose ebony or mahogany, but pine is cheap and easy to work with. Hope I did not confuse the issue. :-)

Reviving a thread!
I just got an SY99 with cracked end cheeks..
Does anyone know if these could be remanufactured or produced as custom jobs?
