LEDs lighting up when power off - failure?

The Yamaha SY99 is a synthesiser combining frequency modulation synthesis (branded as Advanced FM) and sample-based synthesis (branded as Advanced Wave Memory 2) and the direct successor to Yamaha's SY77/TG77

LEDs lighting up when power off - failure?

Unread post by Sy99_Owner » Thu Jan 26, 2017 9:24 pm

Hi All!

I bought a SY99 with the usual issues: RAM batteries low, FDD belt problem, no LCD backlight.
I could solve the first two, and tried to replace the LCD as described by Derek, although I used an other type of LCD (ERM24064FS-1, black on white). Then the SY99 didn't start, the display showed only all dots. I put the original OPTREX display back, without connecting the high voltage cables (the backlight doesn't work anyway) and the three cables from the power supply to the LCD inverter are still cut.

Now the synth works again, but there is an issue (?):
When I shut down/power off most of the LEDs above the buttons light up for a moment. Some are red, some are green and others are orange (both colours active at the same time). Also, the display shows a horizontal black line.
I can't remember whether it was the case before the LCD re-replacement. I thought, it is some voltage peak, caused by some puffer condensators, perhaps the diode between the input and output of the voltage regulator IC went wrong. (I assume, the unconnected LCD inverter may not be the problem, as there are quite a few people having an upgraded "cool blue" display - without connected LCD inverter.)

My questions are:
(1) Is it normal when the LEDs light up when powering off or does this behavior indicate some (future) problems?

(2) When the power off lights are not usual, what can be the reason?

I hope you can help and have some ideas - at least the first question could be answered easily.

Many thanks and kind regards

P.S.: Sorry because of the length of my first post.

Hi

Is there really nobody who could answer?
Please, just power on and off your SY99 and tell me what the LEDs do. Please, it would be a great help for me.
(You have a working SY99, haven't you? :D )

Thanks

Just checked mine: switching on - LCD backlight comes immediately & LCD shows welcome screen - then (after a short delay) showing last used patch name "Tubular!" (I -D04 (52)) & 5 LED light up all together (Voice [red], Song [green], and Internal, D & 4 (all red). Thats all. When turning power off all LED, LCD & backlight went out immediately - none of the LED changes its colour...

Hope it helps

regards,
Miks

Hi
It was my fault. I didn't reconnect the small connector (CN105) near the floppy drive on DM1. All is OK now. :D
