A 1MB non-volatile ram-card. Will it work?

The Yamaha SY85 is a digital music workstation introduced in 1992. Unlike other Yamaha synthesizers of the time (SY77 and the SY99) the SY85 does not use FM synthesis. Instead, its sounds are based on samples, which can be layered and modified to create new sounds.

A 1MB non-volatile ram-card. Will it work?

Unread post by Amalgam » Mon Jul 08, 2019 11:54 pm

Hi all. I’ve just bought on the bay a 1MB non-volatile memory card in the hope it will work with my TG500.
It’s not a symb06 card of half a meg and it doesn’t look like it either. It’s a small rectangular green circuit board with 3 eprom chips attached to it. Nevertheless, the seller said he used it in a SY85, so I guess it’s worth a try.
Is there someone out there expert enough to tell me whether it’s likely to work in the TG500?

THAT looks like a regular SIMM . . . . They are normally used in PAIRS . . . .

Seller may well be right in that he used it in an SY85 - but NOT as Non-volatile Memory . . .

The non-volatile connector is TOTALLY different . . .

I've never owned a TG500, but check out Sector101's page at https://www.sector101.co.uk/syemb06.html

If it helps, My SY85 worked fine with 2 x 4Mb Simms of volatile RAM (manual says 2 x 1Mb).

Oh, silly me. I thought the seller erroneously said it was “volatile memory”, but if it isn’t “non-volatile” I guess it’s going to be perfectly useless then.
There goes a tenner.

That's a 30pin SIMM (volatile 8bit RAM), only used in the SY85 and must be fitted as a matched pair. No other synth in the SY/TG range can use them at all. Should've asked here before purchase. :naughty:

You could always buy a second SIMM and an SY85 to put them both in. SY85 is easily the best SY in the entire range and paired with the TG500 they were an unstoppable wall of sound in the 90's! Capable of outrageous things that no other Yamaha synth can do, not even today, 27 years later!

Long Gone: Far too much gear from the 80's and 90's that went out the door for £££! Moved to soft synth city instead.

All pretty much correct Ajay - and I agree about the SY85 - I still have mine, with 8Mb of RAM and

1Mb of non-vol. (thanks to Brian at Sector101)

You might have an argument on your hands as to if the SY85 was BEST of the Range . . .

I've never owned a 77 or a 99, but appreciate that they were indeed pivotal Synths, having FM as well . . .

BOTH held in high esteem in these forums . . . ((i))

The SY85 is a Rompler, in most peoples eyes, but a GREAT one - with very usable sounds right out

of the Box!
