Find Firmware H8/532 for OS 1.34

The Yamaha SY85 is a digital music workstation introduced in 1992. Unlike other Yamaha synthesizers of the time (SY77 and the SY99) the SY85 does not use FM synthesis. Instead, its sounds are based on samples, which can be layered and modified to create new sounds.

Find Firmware H8/532 for OS 1.34

Unread post by aurochs » Sat Jul 06, 2013 1:36 pm

Hello
I actively search the firmware SY85, I'd be version 1.34, my current version being very old (v 0.96.08). I have OS 1.34, but not the firmware processor that allows it to boot. Who it. I possess the necessary material for the programing of H8/532 - HD6475328CP. Without this code the SY not boot. (which is normal)

May I not a problem with the 0.96 release (strange problem happens between MIDI connections). I know that this bug has been fixed in 1.34.

I also possesses a SY99 is Version 1.57. I can provide this service to other members if necessary.members if necessary.

Hi aurochs,

I also have the OS 1.34 EPROM (donated by a forum member, cannot remember who..), but I do not have the code for the H8. I tried buying the processor through Yamaha but had no luck. I also tried an outfit in the Netherlands for the new CPU but the cost was more than 2x SY85s!

That leave us with finding a donor who will let us pull the code from their CPU but that does not seem likely.

Unfortunately I don't know somebody who owns a SY85 (and is willing to pull out the cpu to read out the 32k eprom area to have it as a file). AND it has to be the 84 pin PLCC package. The SY99 could be fitted with this cpu as well as a SMD type cpu. The SMD is soldered to the main board so it would be (nearly) impossible to desolder it and have a read-out...
I'm not aware if some of the SY85 are even equipped with a SMD cpu...

Ahem.. 8)

With the right adaptor it would be possible to grab the code from it then at least we would have an archive of the V1.20 firmware. I'll do a bit of searching for an adaptor..

Hi Brian,

thanks for making that clear... :D

Looks as if one can get a 'virgin' CPU in a 84-pin PLCC it would be possible to desolder that genuine SMD CPU and solder a PLCC socket instead... then there's only the 'new' CPU to be programmed...

It appears my CPU is a Mask-ROM version but I'm guessing the code could still be pulled from it. Challenge accepted!

Hi all

My SY85 is old version (probably among the first built), Almost all the "computer section" of SY is mounted on a support, which in the H8/532 plcc not SMD version. This is also why I thought that the update is not feasible. The SY99, the H8 firmware 1.5 is known. My problem is that the SY85 necessary firmware is really found. Recover firmware capping component, is unfortunately not reliable. It's a shame, because I am attached to this instrument, we have a long History together! I said that there can be no solution.

I'm waiting for an adaptor PCB to arrive from China to try this with my SY85's SMT CPU. I'll need to remove the IC and mount it on the adaptor board and read it out from there - hopefully it will let me access the MaskROM area. I have a couple of (fingers-crossed!) blank H8's coming from China so I can try programming one and mounting it back in the SY85 to see if this is a success.

Meanwhile I managed to pull the code from my TG500's H8 PLCC CPU so I can now provide the code for firmware V1.10 (CPU & EPROM) if anyone needs it.

It appears they used the SMT version on later versions of the TG500 as well..

I guess it would make sense to add it to the FW collection in the download section:

The adaptor board arrived and the SY's CPU was hooked up to the programmer. Despite triple-checking every connection that MaskROM CPU just would not spit out the code. All I got was a bunch of FFs. Since it is not a PROM device that circuitry must have been disabled. This makes sense but I just had to give it a go!

It is now back in the 85 and thankfully still working :)

Seems as if there's no code implemented in that 32k PROM area of that cpu... 8O

So none of the upgrades are concerning the cpu but only the firmware ROMs as well as (eventually) the wave ROMs... :!: :?: :!:

I’m not sure this follows logically from what Brian said. If I read it right, he means the CPU does indeed have ROM, but it is a mask ROM rather than a PROM, meaning it cannot be read out in the described way. Until someone proves the SY85 does not have/use any type of ROM built into its CPU, which might be difficult if at all possible(?), I don’t think anyone can conclude anything about whether the CPU must be changed to upgrade.

Anyway, thanks for investigating and keeping us posted as usual, Brian! …and Happy belated birthday, Miks! :D

Thanks for the birthday congrats even if it's a 'lil late... :D

Hhmmm... FF normally is the value an 'empty (not programmed/erased)' cell would have. Brian wrote that he's got a bunch of those values so I guess that area is not programmed in any way. Even if it was mask-programmed there should be readable data values... afaik. :?:
I dunno exactly but I suppose my SY99 cpu to be mask-programmed too and I was able to read the 32k area...
