Yamaha Digital Piano Controller App for iPad

Unread post by jimmyjujames » Wed May 29, 2019 10:13 pm

I purchased a new DGX-660 in May 2019

YouTube may have fooled me again
YouTube shows the "Yamaha Digital Piano Controller App for iPad" working with my DGX-660.

I have tried using an
iPad-Pro >>> Lightning Adapter >>> USB cable >>> USB-to-Host connector on DGX-660

I have also tried using an iPad-Pro with the Bluetooth Adapter.
115V wall Charger >>> UD-BT01(USB Bluetooth Adapter) >>> USB cable >>> USB-to-Host on DGX-660

No luck with either setup. The Connection light never turns green.

Hopefully it's operator error (OE)

Chord-Tracker App for iPad seems to work with the DGX660.
Chord-Tracker sees the DGX660 but I have not gone any deeper into software.

I need some moral support.
Either the app will not work until a newer version someday or
Here is how you did it.

Opinions welcome

Thanks

I don't know if it will work with the DGX-660. I'm looking at the "Specs" tab on the "Digital Piano Controller" page, and the only model specifically listed as being compatible with the app is the P-115B/WH:

usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/pianos/apps/digital_piano_controller/specs.html#product-tabs

By the way, one Yamaha app that I can definitely recommend is the "Sound Controller":

usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/pianos/apps/sound_controller/index.html

Not only will it let you add a virtual modulation wheel to your DGX-660, but it will also let you change the LPF (Low Pass Filter) Cutoff Frequency and the LPF Resonance Amount of your DGX-660's voices, not to mention the EG (Envelope Generator) Attack Time and EG Release Time. Changing these four settings can dramatically alter the sound of a given voice on your DGX-660. :)

Thanks Michael

I agree with you the "Digital Piano Controller" app is only compatible with the P-115B/WH

Guess I misunderstood YouTube

Will install the "Sound Controller" app on iPad as you suggested.

Purchased the DGX-660 for my 15 year old great-niece.
She has completed weekly 30-minute lessons for the last 10 months and played
The Entertainer and Over the Rainbow at her last recital.
Impressed me so much that I bought her a DGX-660.
Made her promise to give her old Casio CDP-130 to someone without a piano.

Thanks again

Well, just because a particular model isn't listed among the compatible models doesn't necessarily mean it won't work with the "Digital Piano Controller" or other app.

For instance, the "Sound Controller" doesn't list the PSR-E or DGX models as being compatible, but it definitely works with my PSR-E models, and I've been told that it works with the DGX models.

By the way, Yamaha keyboards can apparently be very sensitive to the length of a USB cable, and you also need to be sure to get the right version of USB cable. Specifically, the cable should be a USB 2 cable rather than a USB 3 cable, and cables longer than 3 meters should not be used. So if you think the keyboard should be working with an app but it isn't, try switching to a shorter cable and see if that helps.

Hello Michael

Early on I noticed "Digital Piano Controller app" did not list the DGX-660,
but YouTube gave me the impression that the app works with the DGX-660.

I used an old USB2 3 foot printer cable. I'll try another cable.

The Bluetooth adapter came with it's own 3-foot cable.

Will try that new usb cable with the Lightning adapter setup

Hoping someone would reply with a working setup.

Since no other replies, it's looking like the "Digital Piano Controller app" will not work with the DGX-660 until a newer version is generated.

I really like the app's graphics instead of having to learning and use the buttons.

But Buttons we shall learn.

Thanks again

You're welcome.

And as far as the connections, if the DGX is working with other apps, then it should also be working (connecting) with the app in question-- if it's compatible, which it apparently is not.

I just mentioned the information about the USB cable in case it isn't working with any other apps, either.
