They tend not to announce them these days as they get ridiculed....

How many millions did the Met Office spend on upgrading their computer systems? Yet there are amateur weather forecasters who predict the weather to a far higher accuracy than the Met and without any of their high tech equipment or training!

I heard Nick Clegg on the radio earlier saying the bad weather and flooding was all due to climate change and how many people do we need to tell us this before we believe the evidence in front of our eyes? He forgot to mention there are just as many scientists and academics who do not support the theory of man made climate change. We all know there is a massive industry behind all this climate change nonsense. It's in their interests to keep pushing it.

Well all I can say is, ten thousand years ago we had a pretty severe Ice Age. Large parts of the planet were covered in glaciers, rivers and seas froze, many species of animal died out...yet not a smoke belching factory or fossil fuel fed power station in sight! Odd that.

It's been so well proved that our little planet goes through natural climate change on a very regular basis. It's done it for millions of years without our input and will continue to do so no doubt long after we have gone. Do we contribute to it? Yes but have we caused it? No. And not a damned thing we do now is going to change anything other than clean up the environment we live in, which I am all in favor of.

Completely agreed again. :D

I've only met two or three believers so far; most of my friends and colleagues are as skeptical as myself. For the believers there is no argument they can put up beyond what they have been drip fed by the left leaning liberal media spin (from the British Biased Corporation) that " the science is settled". They even can't see the basic science that CO2 is a trace element that lags temperate changes by about 200 years and plants tend to love the stuff. Water vapour is the largest green house gas, and we'd be pretty screwed without that.

There's been a bit of "climate change" scare mongering as a result of the floods. But there is no hard evidence of causation that we naughty little carbon burners are the cause. We again have an unstable jet stream quite low over the UK (like the wash out summer a few years back), Solar sunspot activity is still low (William Herschel observed a correlation between wheat yields and sunspot activity).

Quite right on the science being unsettled. Richard Lindzen is the world's leading atmospheric physicist, who thinks the AGW is horse crap.

For the people pushing AGW (like Julia Slingo of the Met. Office) as the cause of these "bibilical floods", here is a very interesting analysis from Anthony Watts, which shows that it's really nothing out of the ordinary when looking at a longer term average, which strengthens the case for the problems of flooding particualrly in Somerset being caused by very bad environmental management of recent years.

Here's a very interesting article from Today's Telegraph from the Spectator Editor

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/colu ... angos.html

This statement is very prescient; taking a Nigel Lawson type approach of "what if Climate Change is happening, can we really stop it, and what cost are we prepared to spend trying to stop it"
If global warming is to make floods more frequent, would it not be better to spend money protecting Britain against these floods – rather than spending billions in the vain hope of slowing the global warming process? This is not a dispute between believers and sceptics, but an argument about how to respond to an era of harsher, more frequent storms. Would it be such a bad thing if the cash spent on subsidising wind farms was spent on buying Dutch-style flood defences? Or doing more to stop 22,000 pensioners dying from the cold each year?

I think that pretty much sums it up Derek. Humans having even the slightest effect on climate change is like King Canut trying to stop the tide coming in (he wasn't actually thinking he could by the way, he was proving a point). Climate change is a Juggernaut that will keep rolling no matter what we do. If we all stopped using fossil fuels tomorrow and moved to so called "green energy" it would not make a spot of difference. Of course there are some very large vested interests in panicking everyone into thinking it's our fault and getting us to spend small fortunes on technology that wont change anything other than make a small percentage of people an enormous amount of money!

Ever wondered why Green Energy actually costs more? Do our bills go down as a result of all these wind farms? Being eco friend costs and they want you to believe your doing your bit and the extra cost is always worth it. Just the same as they con people into thinking recycling is saving the planet when the truth is a large proportion of our so called "recycled" wast actually still ends up in land fill.

The whole thing is a con and people need to wake up and get some perspective!

I always remember Rodrey Morgan saying that if "Climate Change made Wales the new French Riviera then bring it on" being castigated for that statement. When you look at the rain lashing past our patio windows, I am reminded that I thought at the time that he had a point! :)

And, yes, Canute was proving to his sycophantic court that he was not omnipotent.

Lots of sane thought by members here in this thread. One need only look at reality to see that the "global warming" or "climate change" people are so far off base. One active volcano spews thousands if not millions of tons of particulate into the atmosphere in a very short time, how many millions of SUVs over how many years would it take to replicate what that single volcano is doing? And we have hundreds of volcanos erupting every year. One single volcano can plunge the earth into a "Little Ice Age", the earth always has and always will go through climate change with or without mankind's input.

You're quite right, Clyde. The papers and media right new are full of warmists calling people with views like mine idiots. But science by ad hominem attacks is not science.

Well of course the people behind all this want us to look like conspiracy theorists and gooks and they will do their damnedest to make that happen. Unfortunately the great British public are, in the main, way too lazy to find out the truth for themselves and will happily digest the crap that the industry wants to feed them.
