Why not simply having a 'twin-installation' on a computer if possible? I.e. first you install an XP OS and as a 2nd OS you may install Win7 - when starting the computer a BootManager shows up and then you can decide which system (OS) you want to use ... I have one (or two) PCs set up this way and I'm doing fine with it
My (key related) gear (in alphabetical order):
Ferrofish: B4000+
Kawai: K1 II

Roland: D-50, D-110, D-550, PG-1000
Yamaha: AW1600, DX7IID (w/ 'Cool Blue'), EX5R, RM50, RX5, SY99 (w/ 'Cool Blue'), TG500, TX-802, YMM2
Sector101: SYEMB05 (5x), SYEMB06 (3x), EXFLM2 (1kit), MCD Sweet16 (1x), WaveBlade 8MB Card (1x) & 1x Programmer Unit for WaveBlade

I don't think there is a "need" to swap operating systems every time a new one comes out. If what you do and what you need work fine with an old OS and you are not concerned about the lack of updates then stick with what you have.

Personally I like to keep moving forward in both hardware and software, always have and always will. I don't mind renewing hardware every couple of years. I'm always up for new gear :)

Right now only thing I really need to upgrade is my audio/midi interface..oh and the mac when funds allow.

For a lot of musicians XP still works just fine though. Many have invested a lot of money in software and hardware that simply won't run on newer operating systems. If virtualization ran as smoothly as it is supposed to I guess you could have the best of both worlds.

We still use XP for critical systems in work; it just works, and probably one of the most stable OSs that Microsoft did. But in terms of selling a new System, having the base OS as XP is looking positively ancient now, so we will probably migrate to WIN7.

I have Windoze 8 on a new laptop (no choice  ) and positively hate it with the same vehemence as I had for Vista. Performance is fine compared to the dog that was Vista, but this stupid start screen amongst other things does my head in. I also detest the "improvements" in Office with these Ribbon strips. Even after a year, I am far less efficient than I was on the old office, as there is little logic (IMHO) in how they have split things up compared to the old menus and toolbars.

I'm always glad to get back to my Mac, but even that is not as good as it used to be, The performance of Yosemite is not as good as Lion, and I don't like the move away from Skeuomorphism as a design paradigm - I kinda like it! :) Bit it's still streets ahead of Windoze.

Why not dump Windows 8 for Windows 10 tech preview? It's free and works really well plus your not stuck with the Metro interface of Windows 8.

There's a reason why the mac is still so popular in the media world. It just works! No fuss, no hassles, it does what it's supposed to do and does it with style :)

Can you turn off the key-logging now?
In the early days, there was no way to do that from what I've read and heard.
Everything one did was reported back to M$.

This whole keylogging thing has been blown out of all proportion. Most mobile phone apps collect as much if not more data on everything you do. Win10 is a "technical preview" and as such they will be collecting data, it says as much in the EULA so they are not hiding the fact.

As I mentioned previously, I do 99% of my work on the mac. The PC is only used at the moment for Pianoteq and the interface for my Fishman TriplePlay midi pickup. I don't write any documents on there or access my on line banking or anything like that so I'm perfectly fine with the EULA.

Yeah I know it's all part of us now being the product, but personally it was a bit much for me with this one.
I've passed on a lot of mobile apps because they require access to my contacts etc., where any technical requirements for this aren't obvious.

Not because I have much to hide, just out of principle.

I'll wait until all the other people have found the bugs. ;) I need this laptop to be stable as it runs our click tracks and light show in the band; as a general rule I don't upgrade OS until the first service pack comes along.

Personally I think MS have probably taken it a bit far. I can understand the OS needing to monitor what your typing for things like predictive text, but does it really need to also send that information to a third party?

Of course the reality is, we are ALL being monitored no matter what OS you use. It's become quite clear over the last year or so that we have next to no privacy anymore. Of course governments and companies will site terrorism as the excuse for hacking mobile phone networks and eavesdropping on our conversations or hiding root kits on off the shelf laptops and desktop computers. There may be a grain of truth in that but it's more likely to be about control. If they know what we are doing and where we are it's a lot easier to manipulate us all.

Seems we can't have the technology without giving up our private lives to governments, police and corporations :(

Yeah it's about control, but I would think to an equal amount also about money. The more they know about you, the more likely it is that they can show you an ad that you click.

That's of course another even though related subject.
How long will we get all these services for free because the ads are paying for it?

Sooner or later enough PR and advertising people will realise that we are being served ads for the exact products and shops we've already Googled and visited.... and to then pay for an ad to be shown....
