Too Much Politics On The Forum?

Unread post by Saul » Tue Jan 24, 2017 5:56 pm

As it has been brought to my attention that perhaps there is more talk around politics than music on this forum of late I thought it may be a good idea to get some feedback on the matter.

On the one hand I don't want to stifle conversation and debate but on the other we have to consider are we putting people off the forum by the political debate? This is after all a "music" forum.

I have attached a poll so please take part but also your comments are welcome too.

Where on earth would you get an insane idea like that? It can be an ingredient, of course, but really?

Have to agree with Peter on this one Purcell. I know you like to talk about world events but we rarely hear anything from you about music...unless of course it's about Yamaha's failure to provide the "hypersynth' of the future for less than €1000. There is a whole world of music stuff happening out there and really that is the main purpose of the forum, to discuss music and help people with their gear issues. Perhaps I have let it become too general over the years and now is a good time to refocus on our core reason for being?

Surely posting something to a group shows interest, if even one can't find a really on topic subject to post about.
Much better, in my view, than complete silence. I appreciate, others may differ.

Brexit and Trump are certainly subjects that all too often (daily) impose upon my my thoughts and concerns about the future of the planet and our society.

Doesn't it only seem too much because there isn't enough about synths and music and other "on topic" subjects?

:? :? :?

Adds mental note to self.
I must try to finish the more complete review I started some weeks back on Graphite 49, now that I've had time to evaluate it properly.

Well certainly I don't advocate shutting down the debate completely but certainly moving it to the 'don't get me started' section might be the way to go.

Most forums have peaks and troughs in activity and on a down day a bit of banter about off topic subjects can instil some life into proceedings. I think there is some concern though that because the forum is spread so thin and covers so much ground, perhaps we lose focus on the reason for it's existence which of course is music?

The danger of course is that politics, as with religion can be very divisive. Things can get very heated very quickly and soon we will have people flaming and trolling each other. That is not what we are about and although I know we have a very sensible bunch of people on this forum it's amazing how easily things can go wrong.

I think there is plenty of content on the forum. Certainly I have posted a lot myself lately but you can't force people to reply to posts and discuss things if they have no particular interest in it. Of course a lot of the stuff I post has to do with new gear and new software and I think perhaps the core membership here is more interested in vintage gear and legacy software. Maybe it's time I put a survey together as it's not something I have ever carried out and it would be interesting to hear what people actually would like to see on the forum.

For now though and getting back to the original issue here, I think I will move all the political discussion to the 'Don't get me started' section and leave it at that.

I haven't seen any flaming and trolling. Some spirited debate, maybe. It is a music forum first and foremost of course, but as I replied on another thread, if you aren't interested in certain topics, then don't fret and don't read them. :)

It is the same as some of the garbage my missus loves on TV (Mid Sommer Murders and X-Factor, anyone?). I don't watch it, and equally she leaves me allow for some of my music that is too weird for her. Both tastes coexist in the same household. :)
