Hi,

Well that's probably a 220uF capacitor. Alternative it might be a 220nf (0.220uF) value. But probably the former. That would still be OK as a smoothing capacitor. It would take a little longer to charge up and discharge, but would still smooth the supply.

I don't know what the underside markings are. Just remember these capacitors are polarised. The black bar on the top of the can shows the negative terminal.

Thanks, I think I have to contact the ebay seller about this to clarify this, because I explicitly ordered the 22uF version and the label (printed by the ebay seller, not the manufacturer) on the plastic bag that contained them says 22uF.

I would rather use the exact capacitor spec that Yamaha used, even if 220uF would still work as you say.

That's good to hear Tux.

I have to say - last time I had to mess with components (restoring my two ReVoxes) I found it to be a nightmare.
Yes - there is "standard" nomenclature for describing values, but it depends who you ask as to which version of it you are offered.

Then there's the 25 year old manual you're looking at . . . . "Kilocycles" anyone?

Manufacturers and Dealers all seem to have their own version of it and this is where the confusion arises - never mind any differences there may be due to US, UK, EU, TW, CN, JP origin.

Its a right MESS. Should have been internationalised years ago.

Standards are wonderful things - Thats why there are so many of them ((i))

I received the correct caps today, these ones have the following printed on top:

12
22
16V

I'm very pleased with this ebay seller (Bright Components on ebay UK), I can recommend him, while he made the mistake of sending me the wrong caps (mistakes happen to everyone, it's how sellers deal with them that separates the good sellers from the bad ones) he immediately sent me the correct ones when I contacted him and said I could keep the wrong ones. I will certainly buy from him again when I need other electronic components in future.

ALWAYS good to hear about suppliers that understand the benefits to be had through good service.

I still haven't done the actual solder job, I was just looking at youtube to learn how to do it, do you think this guy is doing it correctly, should I do it using the procedure shown in this video or are there better ways?

He nailed it quite well apart from the cap jumping over a bit before the first leg got soldered. Patience is the word! When he's talking about '800 degrees' I gather he means Fahrenheit.

The bodies of those caps are quite slippy - if you squeese too hard on the tweesers the cap will catapult itself across the room :D
