Sharing Libraries and Presets?

Unread post by puremusic » Fri Mar 08, 2019 5:20 pm

I'm having fun with my new Motif ES Rack, exploring the presets and fiddling with them.

I wonder if there is any sharing of user libraries going on, or places where I can download other users custom presets?

Hi, I can't ever say I have noticed one for the Motif ES compared to other synths. I came to the Motif after the EX5 which has a vast amount of free shared patches, and the Motif was a veritable desert compared to the EX5 community and their generosity.

I guess it was the difference between a very deep synth like the EX5, which attracted the programmers keen to explore it, and the Motif, which I always viewed more as a "ROMPLER" that sounded good for the players, but the programmers found boring; the Motif AWM engine was less powerful than the EX5 and you did not have the integrated engines (and fiddly PLGs were no substitute).

Maybe start a sharing area here if Saul will set a downloads area up.

The Motif Rack ES has its niche sound style, and all those effects, so it's a little surprising but I can understand it when you bring up the EX5 from what I've heard. I do want to take advantage of it though and not just ignore it as a host for the PLG cards I'm buying.

My VL card just came in the mail and I have to say, I'm blown away by how well it sounds when you take out a breath controller. Without one, I can't get what I can with. And with, wow. That Shakuhachi for instance.

Now I just need to exercise more so I can breath a bit longer. . .

Figure in a month or two when my wallet has recovered I'll get an AN card too.

Yes, the Shakuhachi is a real stand out, especially when you pair it with a Wind Controller.

Don't get me wrong, the Motif ES sounds fine - I got mine to supplement my EX5 when I expanded into playing more complex songs on stage. So nothing wrong with it. Yamaha got burnt on the EX5 - they released a flawed (but still amazing) product and got flamed in the early days of the internet. The FS1r was a poor seller (who wanted 8OP FM that was even harder to program than a DX7) - but it sounds wonderful, as does the AN1x from the same era. The Motif was the reaction to all of that. Simpler, easier, probably less R&D, and mostly met what the mass market was after (few people program their own sounds). The difference was products like the EX5 andAN1x were interesting from a synthesis point of view,so you ended up with loads of 3rd party patches, but the Motif audience was geared more to people who don't program much or just tweak. Thta's my view, anyway :)

Derek summed that up nicely. Yamaha were not going to plough loads of money into development only to get left hanging in the sales arena again. However had they persevered with the EX5 and built on it rather than heading for the hills and going down the rompler route I think they would have won out in the end.

Happily things seem to be now heading back down a multi synth engine path and giving users the best of both worlds.

I can set up a section for ES downloads but I have a feeling it will be pretty quiet. I don't have anything to put in there myself so we need something to kick it off with?
