If keys are wobbling it is likely they are broken. Keys are difficult to repair. I've tried it unsuccessfully. I don't think you have an easy answer. :(

I've never had to replace any keys, some people seem to be able to do it if they are very patient and willing to take the time, since I haven't done it and don't have much free time to spare, I'd probably get my repair tech to do it.

apart from the fact that i like the idea of getting to know the inside of my instrument by doing it myself, that's prob not so easy for me to do...

i'm living in austria, linz, and i don't know of any tech here able to repair old synths.. in vienna it would be easier, but shipping a synth there is expensive..

i would like somebody to build me in that cool blue lcd, but since i think that exceeds my capabilities, i would need somebody to do that for me. which is not easy due to the circumstances mentioned before.

i'll try to fix the key myself, wanna look at the contacts of some keys anyway.

Hi I'm trying to get some help, I need to replace a key on my motif8, I know nothing about music, I'm just trying to get it fix before I donate it to my local churche, let me try to explain it the best way I can: standing in front of the keyboard (like you're playing it) the number 11 white key (not counting the black ones), from the right to the left, thanks in advance.

I'm a little behind the curve, but here goes...

I have an original Motif, and have a bunch of keys that stick. Someone told me that several years ago, Yamaha offered a replacement key bed for these as this apparently has been a big problem for users over the years. Does anyone know if...

A. The offer is still available?

B. What the cost is?

C. Who to contact?

I've worked on this stuff over the years, so fixing it myself is not an issue, but if it comes to having to buy a bunch of individual keys for $20/ea, I'm out. I'll be looking for the nearest dumpster. 😑

Hi,

I cannot answer your questions other than C. Which is contact your local Yamaha Spares Dept. If the offer is not available, then you could strip the keybed down and see if you can see what the problem is, and order replacement parts.

You can find a guide on how to do this for an SY99 *the Motif keybed should be similar if not identical) on my website guides page

Not sure about the offer. An original Motif (Motif Classic) would be 18 years old now but definitely worth asking. I can check for you if you want?

Personally if I had a Motif with sticking keys and there was not an offer of replacement by Yamaha I would definitely do it myself..as long as it was just a few keys of course. In any case I would open it up to see what had happened and if a repair rather than replacement were possible.

Saul, any info you could get would be great! Hate to deep six it, but if it’s too expensive to fix, it’s too heavy to keep moving around my studio.

I have fired off an email to Yamaha so let's see what they say.

If everything else about your Motif works fine it would be a real shame to scrap it just because of the keys. Why not turn a little profit on it and offer it for spares or repair? There will be people out there more than happy to take it off your hands :)

I heard back from Yamaha this morning and they said there were never any such issues with Motif and there was no keybed replacement offer. They did say they would be able to fix the issue but you would need to contact them for a costing.

Perhaps we need to nail down where the "keybed replacement offer" thing cam from?

Seems to be a fair few posts on there about the same issue so looks like the guys at Yamaha UK either did not know about it or were not very forthcoming with the truth!
