GAS got me again and I bought a Fantom G6

Unread post by EB5AGV » Thu Jun 20, 2019 7:48 pm

Well, I thought the non-GAS period would last more, if just some weeks... but today I have found one deal impossible to pass (well, for a GAS-affected person at least!) :/:

I have bought a Fantom G6 for 524€, shipping included

It is not a perfect shape unit, it has some lower corners scratches, but I still think it is a good price.

I wonder if there is any owner of this king of gear around :?:

I had a white Fantom G6 and it was a beautiful keyboard. Of course I sold it :(

Wish I hadn't but it has always been a case of one in/one out with me. One day I may have room for more keyboards and then perhaps I will get to keep a few.

Thanks Saul, it really looked gorgeous!

Well, I am getting to the point that some should go if I want to keep a reasonable balance with the available space. Luckily, I have enough to accomodate now 6 keyboards on operating position (three at each playing post), three more cleanly stored on a triple support on the synth lab, two or three more on the different tables there and then the rest should be stored on the storage area, which can host about 8-9 more. Of course, rack units are easier to fit  , but I have already ten or so which is also close to the reasonable limit for the available space. And all in 16 months

So, summing up, I will probably sell some keyboard to fit the Fantom G6 but, again, it was too hard to pass for me!. Once I receive it over the next week I will post some comments about it... It will be interesting to find out how it behaves :D

The only real cure for GAS is a small studio! You then have to operate a one in one out policy. I have space for four boards - five at a push if I use the third tier on my Montage/Kronos stand. Whilst I have resisted that for a long time, I may be succumbing.

Of course that does nothing to stop the VSTi GAS! :D

Yeah I have had to step back from the computer keyboard on several occasions recently when I very nearly pressed the buy button for VSTi's! It is way too easy and tempting! At least hardware entails a bit more effort as I would normally only ever buy a keyboard that I was able to collect in person.

Don't start me on this :shhh: !

I got recently Komplete 12, as I had the chance to update from my (bought second hand) Komplete Audio 6 software (I don't know exactly why, but that offer was a great finding). That, along the big discount they offer these days... well, you know how this ended

I have also got recently Pianoteq 6 (student license, it is nice they help beginner players) and a couple plug-ins from Waves. I got also Sektor for less than $15. And I was really tempted with the Arturia offer on V Collection 7, but passed that one... Till next time

I know what you mean. But they give me a vast sonic palette, and the realism needed for emulating the synths/keyboards of old in various endeavours where I want the classic sounds and as authentic as possible, not sampled facsimiles in workstations.

Key thing with VSTis is to bide your time if you can. Most companies have FLASH sales and you can pick them up at amazing prices. Eventide are a good case in point. I probably would not buy their emulations of classic gear at $200, but when it comes for sale at $30.....

Pianoteq is really good. I don’t have Komplete as I am covered by everything else I have, but it looks good.

That Fantom has some nice looks. I always like it when the manufacturers produce a white model.

Waiting on Komplete 13 and Arturia 8 here. There's nothing grabbing me for 12 but Kontakt 6, and I think I can wait on that till 13 when that new Noire piano should go in too.

Yeah that White Fantom G was a one off custom job for Jem Godfrey of the prog rock group 'Frost' It used to have the band logo on it but I removed that.

I had originally bought his Yamaha Motif XS6 and whilst at his place I saw he had just taken delivery of the Fantom G. I would have loved one but as they were brand new then I thought I could not afford one.

As luck would have it, Jem is the sort of chap that when he gets rid of gear he doesn't want to charge an arm and a leg for it and as I had bought yet another Fantom X by then and he was looking for one we managed to do a really good deal and I ended up with a very unique white Fantom G for the equivalent of around £650 :)

I REALLY wish I had not sold it :(

Shame on selling a piece of FROST* history ;)

Great band. Few would believe that Jem can produce bands like Atomic Kitten (day job) but then make music like FROST*! First album (Million Town) is the best, though.

Yeah definitely not one of my better decisions! Not only because of the 'FROST' connection but also because the Fantom G was the last Roland to have Skip Back Sampling. A fantastic idea and I can't understand why they dropped it.

I am still in touch with Jem by the way. He has been trying out the REVO1 Curveboard for us. Wonder if he has any keyboards for sale!

Hi Saul,

I am sad I got back the memories of your Fantom G6 :(

Sometimes time cures things like this and they get deeper on the back of our minds... but then someone gets it back to our memory and we again feel bad about that
